24 hour team row - any tips?

As a small, local gym, we are planning to organise a team 24 hour row in June.

I just wondered if anyone had done anything similar and if so, if you have any tips?

Our plan is to have around 8 people in a team, each person to row 15 minutes at a time, increasing to 30 minutes during the night to give the others a longer break.

Also, does anyone have any tips as to the best way to set the rower up as it doesn't appear to go up to 24 hours? I'm guessing we'd set up as intervals time (ie 3hours, no rest time x 8?)

Thanks

Get lots of milk in a fridge, get packets of Kellog's Crunchy Nut Cornflakes. At 03:00 you'll find those are the nectar of the gods. The hours from 02:00 to 05:00 are the hardest.

When we rowed 24 hours (a the Celtic Manor in Newport, Wales) we divided it into 19 minute 30 seconds stints with 30 second to swap rower (three team members per ergo). I think we tallied the distance with a laptop & spreadsheet. The monitor won't do more than 30 intervals. So you're going to have to tally the metres rowed with a laptop or a piece of paper and a pencil. The risk was that with a 40 minute rest and a comfy chair you could be sound-o before your team mates said "Don't go to sleep".

The three of us managed about 5K per stint at the start then slowed down (we only needed to average 4166m per 19'30" (2:20.4 pace) to get 100,000 for each rower and 300,000 per ergo). We weren't going for keeping the flywheel and handle going continuously, but in 30 seconds the flywheel won't stop.

Thank you for the advice :-)

I looked on the Concept 2 website yesterday after i'd posted and it says you can enter 24 hours as one interval with no rest rather than a single time of 24 hours so will have a look at my rower later and see if thats an option.

That is amazing that you did it as a team of 3  I'm afraid we're not quite so hardcore and are aiming for three teams of eight.

This was our crew from the Celtic Manor event with Dougie (Citroen) on the right, Dave Speed seated and me on the left.

When Georgina Price and I rowed a 24 hours tandem record at Bristol we had stints of 30 minutes throughout.

With a team of eight, trying to cover the maximum distance possible, I would suggest two minute stints giving a fourteen minute recovery period which is more than ample. Rowing fifteen minutes, I would seriously consider doing it as sub-teams of four doing three hours at a time. This would mean rowing three stints of fifteen minutes with forty-five minutes rest and then having a three hour break.

Good luck with it.

Regards,
Joe

Thanks Joe.

I definately think a team of four is something to work towards maybe for next year in the format you suggested ...thank you.

Because we've got a few gym people who are not really Rowers we've tried to make it a bit more do-able re rowing times and rest.

We completed our 24 hour row a couple of weekends ago....three mixed teams of eight people (still don't know how you did it as teams of three!!)....over a 1,015,000 metres rowed between the three teams and over £1000 raised for Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance :D

Many thanks for the tips (especially the Crunchy Nut Cornflakes !).
