Although Daniel James Brown's "The Boys in the Boat" primarily covers the 1936 US Olympic gold medal eight oared crew from the University of Washington, it's also an excellent depiction of life in the United States in the 1930s and of the Olympic games held in Berlin. It's one of the best books I've ever read.

If you're looking for a manual about all aspects of physiology, training, racing and technique, 'Rowing Faster' Ed. Volker Nolte ISBN 0-7360-4465-5 is hard to beat.

Craig Lambert's 'mind over water' ISBN 0-618-00184-0 is an interesting account, drawing from many years, of the life of an aspirational rather than an elite rower. It includes his visits to the CRASH-Bs and the Head of the Charles.

It's a great pity that the blogs on the UK forum are no longer available. Some were very detailed and written with skill. I hope that Larry Tait, for one, managed to download his entries before the demise of that forum. I would hate to think that all that thought, expertise and humour has just vanished into some internet limbo.

I knpow the Boys in the Boat has been suggested several times but personally I learned an awful lot from reading it about the science of team rowing, for example the ideal physical requirements for each position in the boat from coxswain through stroke to bow.

'The Shell Game' by Kiesling should be on any list of rowing books.
