There's no particularly setting you have to use, as they don't change the amount of work you have to do to cover a particular distance, so choose whatever feels most comfortable to you. To give you a guide, most people row between 3 and 5, or at a drag factor (search for it!) somewhere around 120-140

There's no Damper Police in just the same way that there's no Stroke Rate Police. But you will tend to find that a higher drag moves the focus of the stroke from legs to arms/upper body. Since the biggest part of your rowing engine are your quads it's normally a good idea to get them used to provide more of your rowing power.

Big folks are always going to tend to use a higher drag and lower stroke rate than the short Duracell bunnies.

Setting drag and choosing a stroke rate will always be a personal preference and should be chosen to maximise your output (which results in quicker times).

I row everything on 120 drag except short course sprints. I used 168 drag for a 17.9s 100m that I rowed at a competition in March.

Search on here and on http://concept2.co.uk/forum for "drag factor".

You'll find a helpful "Introduction to Indoor Rowing" on the FAQ board. One of the topics addressed in that thread (in numbered item 3) is Resistence Level and Drag Factor.
