Very impressive. Results like yours make me astounded, I really don't think I could ever pull 1:35 or less even once; let alone for over three minutes.

Thanks everyone. Barely a PB Francois, by 1/10 of a second :) . But I'll gladly take it! I may have gone just a bit fast starting out. The last 500 was 0.5/500 pace slower then the first 500. The last 200 I was just able to hold pace. Ave. 35 s/m, 140 drag factor. I'm actually looking forward to trying it again (weird, eh?) I've got to concentrate a bit for the next little while on cycling. The big race up here is the Klondike to Chilcat bike relay on the 17th. We're going to take some extra time after the race to spend around Haines, Alaska. It's a great little town right on the coast. We'll spend a few days doing day hikes. If any of you ever get up this way, I'd highly recommend going to Haines in the fall. They have the highest concentration of bald eagles of anywhere in the world. There are often 10 or more eagles in one tree. http://baldeaglefestival.org/ We haven't gotten to the festival yet, but I went there several years ago and got some great photos.

Just beware of the new changes for going across the border. A couple of things are going to affect us. I'm not quite sure why, but you can't take dog food across the border :? , No fresh fruit either, except bananas. Makes you wonder why bananas are safe?

Welcome back to Scott Broussard, from Duson, Louisiana, USA to the Eh!Team. Scott was with us way back in February, but we have not seen him in a long time.

Nice to see the boat picking up steam.

Keep on rowin', eh.

Welcome back Scott!!!

Congrats to Jim and Shannon. I believe Shannon got a PB by 0.5 seconds since her first try less then a week ago. How did yours go Jim? Was it a PB? Maybe you could both tell us about it when you get a chance :) . John.

I did get another PB by 5 tenths of a second. Basically all I did differently was to go with more even pacing, trying to avoid the dreaded fly and die   ! Just by pacing better, I was able to feel much more in control and get half a second faster too! Now we just need one more person to get the second boat complete.

Mine was a PB my almost 3 seconds (2.7). I was a happy camper.

I did a 6k warmup with with 200 meter pulls of goal pace -1 at 3500, 2500 and 1500. During the last 1k of the warm up, I did some 20-22 spm for a few hundred meters. I then took 4 minutes off and just walked around to get some water.

Then it was a mental game.
My goal was to beat my previous time (3:30 - 1:45 pace)
I pulled out of the start at 1:40 and had to calm myself down to settle in to 1:45. I held 1:45 - 1:46 until 500 meters, knowing that if I could get passed 400 meters, things would look a lot nicer. At 500 I started to pick it up. I think I was pulling 1:40 - 1:43 (I would have to look it up). I was thinking this is going to be easy. At 750 I would have put the handle down, except I kept saying less than a minute, less than a minute and I DONT want to do this again for a while.

When it was all said and done, it was 3:27.3 and I was a tired but happy camper.

Keep on rowin', eh.

Once again, well done Jim. Three seconds is a HUGE PB! I've been doing my warm ups very similarly to the way you did your, and it seems to work well :) . I did it a bit differently for the last 1k. I rowed for 6k total. At 1.5k, 2.5 and 3.5 I rowed up to race pace during 10 hard strokes, then at 4.5k I rowed for 200 meters at race pace -10. I'm not sure which warm up I like better, but will have to play with it some more. The 10 stroke thing comes from the UK's interactive 2k program which I'm thinking of doing later this summer. The program looks well thought out and can be done for 16 weeks or more, 5 or more workouts / week. It lays out what pace to go by which makes it simple to use.

I'll give a v-beer to the person who fills the second boat :D !!

Congratulations Shannon and Jim for your PBs! :D

Jim, 3 seconds is a quantum leap improvement for a 1K :!:

John, are you going to give a v-beer if someone is displaced from boat #1 ?

Congratulations, Jim.

I hope to make an attempt this weekend.
I was curious what stroke rate you settled in on. I experimented with >30 for a little bit last weekend (during the course of a longer row). Didn't really make up my mind whether that's how I would try to do it. Lately, when I start to feel the effort, I find it better / natural to slip into a two breaths per stroke pattern. Not sure if that's good or bad, but it feels right. But it didn't feel right to breathe that often while also having a stroke rate over 30.

Congratulations Shannon. Nice to see everyone getting new PB's. This encouragment is very helpful.

I hope to make an attempt this weekend.

I was at about 28 for the first 500-750 then 30 for the last part. I find my efficiency decreases a lot over 35spm but this may just be a matter of practice.

Keep on rowin', eh.

Yesterday was my annual check up with my cardiologist. No changes in meds, just need to watch my cholesterol. So with the confidence that I have a reasonable chance of making it through an all out 1K I gave it a try this morning. My goal was to average 1:52 /500.
Splits
1:51.3 28 spm
1:52.5 27
1:51.7 27
1:51.0 27
1:49.5 27
Finished with an average of 1:51.3 and a time of 3:42.6. Thank You Eh! Team for the encouragement. :)

Good Job Chris!
You started a little fast, but afterwards you held very nice splits!
You might want to experiment with higher stroke rates, and see if that makes you faster.

Cheers!

Good idea Francois! I think I'll start that when you knock me down to the second boat, but with the hot weather we're having here (someone told me we were the hot spot in Canada yesterday) it might have to be a real one.
:D :P

Great job Chris!!!

John, your place is secure in boat #1, as there is no way I can pull 3:18.

Enjoy the weather while it last; here, the temperature is dropping and is supposed to reach 9 C by the end of the day! Moreover, we are expecting a maximum of 12 C for the weekend, with rain, of course!
