I'm not invested in whether meters on the water should/should not be logged on the honors board, but wanted to mention that meters on the water can be measured quite accurately with a SpeedCoach. I use one every morning, and most scullers I know use them. Very cool devices. If they would be of interest take a quick peak at the Neilson Kellerman website.

Would sitting in my rocking chair in front of the telly raising a nice cool beer to my lips at frequent intervals (SPM 25 say) count

Yes, most with very poor technique! You row OTW at all John, i was a runner and i didnt sit in a boat and find it that instinctive :D
