This effectiveness involves a host of things--preparation for the catch, footwork, posture, timing, sequencing, quickness, hanging on the handle, etc.

I have been doing foundational rowing at low rates and high stroking powers (and little else, except a few races, here and there) for the last six years.

....edited to remove info not relevant to my post and with some words being borrowed for my use below.

I have been doing foundational rowing at rates and stroking powers (and little else, except a few home virtual races) for the last six months since getting my C2E.

My strokes when doing recovery rows looks much like the top image.

My strokes when pushing looks much like the lower image.

Not having been able to workout for the previous 5 years before my 4xCABG of Feb 2008, I had become nearly an invalid not being able to walk over 100 feet before getting out of breath and resting during the period between June 07 and the surgery.

Over the period between June 07 (where I my weight was over 300 lbs) and Feb 09 (where my weight was just below 290 lbs) I had lost that weight through loss of muscle mass I am sure.

Now my weight is right at 205 lbs. Over the past four months of C2 workouts my weight has been very steady and my strength has increased significantly but still not up to the power ratings shown above. I still keep my workouts below a suggested HR limit until given more information from my Doctor. I am still looking to get my weight down more over the coming months of the New Year. I am doing approximately 60k meters per month on average lately.

Before June 09 my primary workouts were using the Airdyne and Cardio Rehab using the Treadmill, Airdyne and Stepping machine. I thought I was fairly fit being able to exercise on the Airdyne for over 60 minutes getting my HR over 140 bpm for most of that time. But once getting on the C2E it proved that my fitness was anything but good. In the six months after getting my C2E, I have gone from not being able to hold the handle more than five minutes till being able to do 60+ minute sessions and a couple of HMs. My muscle tone has increase greatly and I hope for continued increase with increasing load and endurance training in the coming months.

At times progress seems slow but at other times seems remarkably sudden, like over the past three weeks where I jump my best efforts in over six categories. Here is a link showing the HR profiles and lines for EPOC for each of those efforts:

Here is an image showing my increase in conditioning over the last three months:

Image

My EPOC is about 65% lower for an increase in power from 148 to 159 watts with a lower HR. Note that the HR is much smoother for the latest session than the earlier one suggesting additional muscle control.

My effectiveness needs a lot of work on a host of things--preparation for the catch, footwork, posture, timing, sequencing, quickness, hanging on the handle, etc. but with time this will come as has the progress shown over the past six months.

I too had bypass surgery earlier this year and have been using a purchased D model as my primary means of rehab. I also walk 5 miles a day. I find the rower to be the perfect exercise.

Maybe we can offer mutual support, hints and tips.

That web site for Cardiac Athletes is a great site to get a lot of information and support. I have been on that site with my journal since Mar 09. That is my first tip....

Let me know what level of workout your doing now. You can read in detail my progress in my journal.

I have been lurking on that site for quite some time. I have not joined because I definitely am not a returning athlete. I smoked for 45 years and was a couch potato until God gave me a second chance. The athletes on that site are very inspirational and have motived me more than they will ever know. I have seen your posts on that site and you gave me the idea of taking up rowing. Thanks for that.

I currently row 10,000 meters in the morning before going off to work and then am able to take in a five mile walk at lunch time. By the time Friday comes along I am pretty sore and take the weekend off to recover. I am trying to work on my endurance. My best times are the shorter rows. I did a half marathon a few weeks back but my time was terrible but I was just glad to finish. Dehydration seems to be a big issue on the longer rows.

As you know - the first couple of months after CABG are pretty tough both physically and mentally. Thanks to all the CAs for getting me through the tough times and giving me hope.

I don't fit in with those runners and triathlon athletes since I have never been competitive either but they are an inspiration and it was such a good place to start a journal that I took it up. Come on in and become the second rower like me starting a journal as well. I think keeping a journal of progress even if you don't keep it up every week is a good thing to do.

When I first had my 4xCAGB I did not know how I should feel but after a while I got used to feeling better and I want to keep it that way.
