Am I missing something...?
I realise that it may be very impolite to ask...but that never stopped me before!
The leader board for the Holiday Challenge shows the highest average metres to be around 60,000 per DAY! so far. And total metres in excess of 600,000 since Thanksgiving (U.S. of American style).
Are there parts of the world where days are longer than 24 hours, where work has been abolished, where children, dogs, cats, cars, gardens and everything else take care of themselves! (Where bottoms are made of iron?).

Two days?!Ben Rea wrote:I wish I knew the answer too
surely after at least two days of 60k you would be completely wasted?
I was wasted after one day of 42.195k!!!

income,
I've noticed these people too - especially on the regular honor board.
I think erging is great, but anything, ANYTHING, in excess is no good. Erging 4-5 hours a day every single day is a sickness, and I'd recommend help for these people.
Please don't aim for this! For god's sake, if you're this addicted to rowing, move to beside a large lake and at least do it outside!

Oh, I agree if it's true it is sick and you need not worry about me attempting anything like it! There are one or two other things I do which take precedence over even rowing....living for one and sleeping for another.
I think I am on page two of the regular metres per day honour board at around 4,700 m per day, which surprises and impresses me no end!!
But it seems to me so improbable that these people could be doing these distances day after day as to be unbelievable. That's why I started by saying it might be impolite to ask; because I am doubting the word of another (in fact several other) rowers. If they did even a mere 5k per day on none holiday challenge days their overall average would be far higher than the current leaders of the honour board...around 8k per day?

Hi ck,ckaiserca wrote:Brent,
Take a look at the Annual Meters Honor Board! There's one guy listed there as doing at least a full marathon every single day!
When I go to the annual metres honour board the top guy is on 4996m/day...or am I looking in the wrong place?

The honor board are divided into 5 sections... more than 10000/day, more than 7500/day, 5000/day, 2500/day, 1500/day. There are links to all of them atop the list of people.icomefrombirmingham wrote:When I go to the annual metres honour board the top guy is on 4996m/day...or am I looking in the wrong place?

You do realize there are different categories for the annual meters board?icomefrombirmingham wrote:If they did even a mere 5k per day on none holiday challenge days their overall average would be far higher than the current leaders of the honour board...around 8k per day?
You can find them by clicking the different links at the top.

Well that makes more sense. I knew I couldn't be on page two overall....but no I hadn't seen the other categories.
That means people are actually rowing a marathon a DAY!????
Based on that I retract my cynical doubts about the holiday challenge 60,000 m per day guys...it must be true and good on 'em.
I mean, I have to admire the stick-to-it-iveness but my god!...people are spending five times more time excercising than they will add to their lives BY excercising?!
Still I'm humbled...but still happy with my spot in the 2,500 m + per day category. I must admit though...their is a guy in the same daily category who is 20 years my senior and who lives in the next city to me who is pulling away from me....I'd better concentrate on him and leave the ultra-maniacs...I mean marathoners to themselves.
Thanks for pointing that out John,
Brent

The marathon a day crowd are mostly retirees. If I spent even a HM on the rower each day I would be neglecting my kids. I can only figure those guys get the high out of rowing that Arnold claimed he got from pumping iron.

Yes you are probably right...though I have no personal experience of a rowing "high"!badocter wrote:The marathon a day crowd are mostly retirees. I do notice that if I set the PM for 6k or 10k I begin to regret it as I approach the end of the piece...so I immediately reset it for either 2k or 15% of the distance already rowed and savour my last few minutes. However, on the whole after I get off it I just think that there's x hundred calories beaten back for another day

some people will row for a month and then at the end of that month, log the meters they rowed which results in a VERY high daily rowing.
my friend is doing that for the holiday challenge but i encouraged him not to.

I assure you that the top guys in the meter count are doing nearly a marathon every day. Take a look at Bob Noble's log book -- you can view it by selecting his entry on Freespirits meter board:Ben Rea wrote:some people will row for a month and then at the end of that month, log the meters they rowed which results in a VERY high daily rowing

Actually...I don't believe this would influence anything. The average appears to be based on your total against how many days into the season we are...not on your total against how many days you have logged meters.some people will row for a month and then at the end of that month, log the meters they rowed which results in a VERY high daily rowing.

I have logged 50k per week since starting...but only started in September. My average only shows as 2800 or so...despite it having actually been closer to 7k (if you only look at the days I actually owned an erg). The months of "0s" at the beginning of the "season" appear to be factored in (rightfully so...as it prevents the loophole you were worried about).
As to the people going 50k+ per day...most would consider the 25-30k a day I used to average swimming unfathomable (around 6 hours water-time per day...7 days a week). Even top-level swimmers. It really just comes down to how much time you have to devote to something...how much interest you have in devoting that time...and what you get used to. I have no doubt that there are a select few on this large planet of ours willing to do unfathomable things on the erg...at least unfathomable to you and I!
