lowering erg times without erging

Post by sammac112 » January 27th, 2007, 10:01 pm

In addition to rowing at my school, i wrestle during the winter months, ending in mid febuary.

Practice is 5 days a week, and gives me a very good workout, leaving me exausted each day.

My question is, with the crew season upcoming, will these wrestling practices prepare me for a trasition into erging.

or, in other words, can exercises other than erging, potentially help to lower erg times.

Wrestling is one of the best non rowing exercises you can do to prepare for it.

That's curious. In what way is this so? I wouldn't have thought of wrestling off the top of my head. I would have thought biking, cross country skiing, or speed skating.

Running is great for CV but not much for strength.

I don't know of any sport that works the muscular strength and endurance of the body as much as does wrestling.

yes,

I have done many sports throughout my middle and highschool years and none have pushed me as hard as wrestling has, but crew is a close second

Wrestling is not rowing specific enough, in body movement, to be of great benefiit to you. There's nothing there that mimicks the rowing stroke. Despite feeling tired afterwards it still has a very small ratio of cardio work involved compared to other sports. There are plenty of non rowing specific sports that will fatigue your muscles but what's the use of that if your not doing a similar movement and don't tax the lungs.

If you have plenty of snow around in winter then the best power endurance sport to help your rowing is cross country skiing (skating technique). The U.K. rowing team use it in winter for cross training. It's a whole of body exercise that places huge demand on your c.v. system. The only drawback is that it's quite difficult to learn the skills to reap its rewards.

Otherwise if you live somewhere where you can row in winter then you can do away with erging altogether and just scull until crew rowing starts up again. You'd be surprised at how well you perform the erg time trials for crew selection.
PBs: 2K 6:13.4, 5K 16:32, 6K 19:55, 10K 33:49, 30min 8849m, 60min 17,309m
Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

I am also a wrestler by winter and a crew by spring.

I don't know if its just my teams (wrestling- The best in the State|Crew-Soon to be)

In wrestling i always came home dead, not wanting to move at all. But at the same time i rarely got sore, like in Crew. In a side note a wrestling match is the perfect time for a great erg time (6min)

Crew on the other hand, doesn't have the constant 1.5 all you got practices. But it does I believe give y ou a better chance of gaining muscle, and perfecting your technique in season, compared to wrestling were 1. in wrestling their is hardly enough time for your body to rebuild muscle 2. In season for wrestling what technique you have that is all you're going to get, while in Crew you can always get better technique in season.

I would have to say that Wrestling is the Hardest Sport Ever.

But in order to be great at wrestling you must start when you are 5YEARS OLD

This is Why i love Crew, even though its the new basketball, you can join whenever and be the best in the state.

p.s i would try to do some running after practice some day's,Endurance thats what hurt me this year (Great on the 1k-3:24 Not so great on 2k-7:04)

Good luck this year fellow Wrestler

Well I don't ever touch ergos unless it's for a trial to get selected into a crew and I've always been fastest in my age group (and a lot of the older guys at school)

I mainly adjust my training to what I need - during this off-season, I'll be working on power because that is one of my weak points at the moment.

Wrestling, as far as I know would be a great help towards erging as it improves strength as well as fitness I'm sure.
