Around the World Row!

I was sorry to hear that your 5K didn't go to plan. I think you are asking a lot of yourself to go flat out for the last 400m. Thats, what, a minute and a half? I'm no expert, (or Graham Benton!) but there's no way I would go flat out for that long at the end of a 5K.
How about this? Your target of 19.00 is 1.54 pace. Set out at 1.55 for the first 2K then reduce your rate by 1 second every K. 1.54, 1.53, then 1.52 with the last 150m flat out. Hopefully with the conservative start you'll have some gas left in the tank at the end.
I've tried negative splitting and have had some success. I must admit though to "making hay" at the beginning to build up a reserve for a rest in the 60-80% range with another push in the last 20%. Today I was aiming to beat my PB of 8082m and so knew that 1620m average would do it. That was a pace of 1.51.1.
My splits/6 minutes were:
1641 (1.49.6), 1620 (1.51.1), 1614 (1.51.5), 1599 (1.52.5) and 1641 (1.49.6) to finish at 8114m.
Good luck!
Dave

We are currently passing through the Mato Grosso do Sul regionof Brazil.
Some neat fish in the rivers here too, so don't dangle your toes overboard for too long!
.
Look at the clarity of that water.
Keep on rowin', eh.

Dave; I will try your suggestion, probably this weekend. If I expire this Saturday then I will have one last crack at it the next weekend. My usual tactic has been to start slower than the overall average pace, in this case 1:57 to start, then do little sprints a the one quarter, half and three quarters to get to the needed split distance (for example in this case at 4 minutes and forty five seconds aim to be at 1250 metres, etc). The final sprint is the last 200 m. In retrospect it was ludicrous to think I could sprint for 400 m.

My wife and Mother-in-law went down to Toronto today so I thought I'd have a go at a HM before work. Very pleased with the result.
1-22:28.6 took 4:08.1 off my best that I rowed for the Solstice challenge (also my last HM!) I'll have another go next Solstice challenge
Most pleasing was the even pacing: 1:57.5, 1:57.3, 1:57.8, 1:57.5 and 1:56.0.
Least pleasing was the pain in the butt. Even with a gel seat, neoprene pad, towel and bubblewrap!
Cheers

We have made it into Paraguay. We are in the far north of the country, in the area known as Alto Paraguay
This is a photograph of the Brazil/Paraguay border.
Check out the commentary. Sounds like a wild and wooly place, keep your oars in the water!
Keep on rowin', eh.

I'd like to congratulate my 10 year old Nicholas for completing the Kid's Holiday Challenge!
We finished our respective holiday challenges last night. I'm going to keep training to try to get the speed heading back to the right direction. I think he might take it a bit easier.
I'm off work 'til the new year so there'll be time to relax as well as time to work off the festive calories.
Merry Christmas to all!

Congratulations, Eh!Team
A record day of 721,370 meters. That puts us over the 45,000,000 meter mark and well into Bolivia.
Keep on rowin', eh.

Chris, no problem. I have corrected it.ChrisH wrote:I had a double entry in my log book yesterday that I corrected. The Eh! Team log, however, shows 2 sessions for December 23rd. Hope this can be changed.
My goal today is 40k, should put me over 5 million lifetime meters so I can get a long sleeved T-shirt for xmas!
Best of the season to all!
