gym ergs
Why are ergs the lest used machines in the gym and what can be done about that?
Whenever I go to the gym the two model C and D ergs are always empty, how can erg use and proper erg care be premoted. They aren't maintained well and teh chain is always pulled out. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm in highschool so I really can't offer to give a demonstration or teach a class... so what can I do.
It saddens me to see people get on teh machine and pull 4min with terrible technique and 4:50 splits, get off leave the chain pulled out and forget to wipe down the machine. Any suggestions?
I'd love to offer to teach a class but I'm in highschool so I don't think that would work so well.

Perhaps you could talk to one of the gym's employees about posting a small sign asking people to wipe the machine/rail & replace the handle to it's proper position. Diagrams might help
.
In terms of helping others attain proper technique, perhaps one of C2's vertical-shaped technique stickers for each machine is the way to go. That, or you could print some pictures of proper technique & incorporate them into the maintenance sign. Just be sure to make the sign's language supportive rather than pejorative. People are of course more likely to follow suggested guidelines when they're presented in a friendly manner.

Not a bad idea although the technique stickers are already on the machines. I will ask if I can make a little note about putting the handle back and wiping down the track, and of course I'll try to be as nice as possible, I love seeing people use the ergs which are usually empty... I just wish more people would try them.

Why You Ask?
Why would I want more people to row, since I'd then have to wait around for others to finish using the limited number of machines? Better to be engaged in a less congested activity.
Besides, I'd then have to spend so much time correcting the insanely bad technique of non-rowers. I'm honestly afraid for some people; their technique is so bad.

I have an erg at home... so conjestion is not an issue, I often use it at the gym for time trials because I feel stupid stopping in front of people whereas at home it is me and the erg.
Sometimes that doesn't work though. Once my double partner and I were erging and I decided to do a 2k. The first one I stopped 200 meters in laughing because her coxing skills are lacking but the second time I got about 1300 meters in when an old man came and stood behind me so I couldn't lay back watching. My friend told him he needed to move, she needs to do this for school and the guy says "Oh really, what school?" I didn't finish the peice.
Another time I had the gym lady telling me I would hurt myself using the machine like that, it's meant to work out your legs but you will hurt your back if you lean. She wanted me to row completly straight backed.
Oh well, they can look at the animation on the model D and the stickers on the model C...
And yes, I have had race challenges although it wasn't me making the challenges. Needless to say the guy was pretty embarassed to get his butt kicked by a highschool girl. (the race was 200 meters and his average splits were 1:55) I should race there more... much better results than CRASH-B's.

There's a growing trend in erging workout classes on the West Coast and probably major cities with large clubs and lots of spce, but smaller clubs and smaller towns can't afford a bunch of machines. And they get more members by offering Zumba classes than erg classes. My club has 2 C2s and 2 Swinn's. But as much as they'd like to get more C2s (the manager ergs a sub 40 10K at least once a week) it's not in the budget.
I've noticed that most people using the C2s don't stay on them that long (5-10 minutes). So you can use the stairmaster or eplitical trainer for a few minutes to warm up while you're waiting. As far as showing technique. The best thing I've found it to practice it yourself. Then maybe the person on the machine next to you will look over, wonder how in the h--- you're pulling twice as fast in speed but doing less strokes and try to follow your lead. You can offer to instruct the trainers, but many of them theink they know it all already. But I'd advise against trying to offer unsolicited advice to someone using the erg. Let them ask you.
