One of the World's greatest sweep oar rowers of all time, James Tomkins, is now 40 and is hoping to add to his gold medal tally in Beijing. When he cranks up his training for Beijing the record is likely to fall to him. And he is probably unaware that it is there for the taking.
Do you think he's really got that in him? I'm sure I haven't heard any of his Erg Scores, but did hear that they weren't particularly spectacular. As opposed to his Rowing, which is very good, though not his sculling.

Is he seriously contemplating Bejing, I thought I heard he was retired an doing some ballroom dancing or somesuch.

I think Tomkins trains on a RowPerfect, which would suit him well for breaking the record on a c2.

Do you have competitions in Australia though?

The 5:58.1 by Gary Wise could be the real WR then.
Please note that my 40y.o 2000m piece done in 2002 was 5:58.7, not .1.
Cheers

Apologies to Bob S. My morbid curiosity just has to ask.

Why is that, John?

Before the last Olympics James Tomkins was getting sub-6 minute erg scores somewhere around 5:58. Recently he had been taking a break from elite competitive rowing and has been making cameo TV appearances on popular local TV shows such as "Dancing with the Stars". Each time he gets asked about Beijing he says he's going to race there.

Considering he's hopeless at dancing and sculling he will make a come back at what he knows best. Sweep oar rowing. Since he's only a young 40 year old there's no reason why he cannot continue to just go sub 6 on the erg. Relative to other elite rowers, that may not be all that great, but none of those guys that can beat him on the erg can move a boat like he can.
PBs: 2K 6:13.4, 5K 16:32, 6K 19:55, 10K 33:49, 30min 8849m, 60min 17,309m
Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

That is great to hear, I think that will put him as one of the oldest Olympic Athletes ever, fantastic stuff and should inspire us not to use age as an excuse. Was that a C2 Erg score or RP? If RP, any idea on the settings used? I assumed he was not sub 6 as I would not classify any sub-6 as anythign less than quite fast.

Cheers.
