VR rowing? Anyone ever try it out?

Post by matthew92 » June 22nd, 2022, 1:25 pm

So I recently discovered an app called Holofit that essentially throws in VR to the mix, letting you simulate your rows by putting a headset on when rowing. Seemed really immersive and pretty neat to me (I'm kinda heavily into tech...).

I was actually thinking to get a VR headset anyway for gaming-related purposes so this might be enough to push me over the edge. The thing is I just don't know where to start and what would be best for me. Do I start out small and go for something like the Oculus Rift S or do I go all out and get the Valve Index?

I've looked at comparisons and buyer's guides (there's a useful chart at the bottom of this guide), but I'm not really well-versed enough to know how important per-eye resolution and field of view range is.

If anyone has any insight into this, I'd love to hear what you think. Is VR rowing even something that works well?

TIA!

Hello,

I've already seen a few videos on the use of VR rowing and indeed, it looks very immersive. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to test it yet. Maybe later on.

My thoughts:

Sweat and heat - I can't row under the hood for a significatn time. Others are saying this is no issue.

It is immersive, indeed. However, with most devices there comes a cable. Next: get the possible best quality (in terms of image quality) headset you can get. It will still look awful compared to the crisp and clear image of a TV or monitor.

I own a Rift, Rift S and Quest2.

I agree with the image quality issue, we'll have to see further developments in the VR industry, maybe later on it can look just as good if not better than a monitor display.
