Low battery / Skierg Pm5

Post by johnlvs2run » April 6th, 2019, 5:07 pm

The Pm5 battery charge on my Skierg was only 62 percent this morning.
I've only had the Skierg for 8+ months. Is that normal? How low can it go and keep working?

According to the C2 battery issues link:
If using a Pm4, plug the PM into a USB port of a computer overnight to charge battery.
Does that apply to the Pm5 too?
If so, how high should the charge go, and how long should it last, another 8 months?

The rechargable battery pack was removed from PM5. For PM4 it never worked terribly well.

Swap out your flattening D-cells for another pair.

Bummer. :(

How low can the charge go before the Pm stops working?

I ordered new batteries, then tested the current ones and they're still green. :!:

I was also surprised with how my rower's PM5 was chewing through batteries. I can't remember exact % details, but the batteries that came with the PM5 lasted from Aug 2017 to the end of June 2018. The next set lasted until early Jan 2019, and I remember seeing a reading below 20% before I changed them. A couple of times a workout didn't save to memory, so it's probably worth changing above that level.

The current set is still showing as 100%, but I've been regularly leaving the PM5 plugged into a USB phone charger (but switching the monitor off when not in use). I was doing a lot of intervals in 2018, so I suspect the idle time during rests might have been draining the batteries (PM5 staying on, but no power being generated from the flywheel). I use ErgData while rowing, so that might also contribute to the power draw.

The PM5 on my BikeErg had batteries showing just under 60% when I got it in Aug 2018, which worried me, but those batteries are currently still showing 52%. There has been a lot of continuous non-interval use, but maybe it's also because the PM5 is one of the newer hardware models (with the green C2 logo). Not sure if there was an improvement in power usage between versions, or more efficient power generation from the BikeErg.

Thanks for sharing those details. I took longer recoveries for awhile, which was likely a factor.
I'll use these batteries through the end of the month, then switch and see how long the new ones will last.

Update with response from C2, 60% should last for quite awhile, but approaching 20% and lower can cause issues.
I'll keep using the current ones to see how long they can last, certainly below 50%, and will keep the new ones for back up.

I've been experimenting this week with active recoveries, which has worked out quite well, so my plan is to use
active recoveries from now on, which should help the batteries to last longer, and will be a nice relaxing change for me.

Will a 5V 2A USB phone charger work well for doing that with a C2 USB cable?

I've been using an old iPhone charger with my C2 cable, so that should work fine.
