I had a read of that writeup about him and he certainly lived an eventful active life.

My deepest condolences.

Oh of course, very familiar with him. A sad loss, and again my deepest condolences.

I agree, he was incredibly bright and articulate and wrote in a manner that was younger than his years. It is my hope to have a similar exit, to be thinking clearly and communicating well right up until the end.

Having met him once I can say he was a scholar and a gentleman. I hope his family has access to this thread.

Just saw this (on another thread). Bob was a gentleman. Very sad news. He was one of the brightest, most positive influences on this board. Never talked about his accomplishments and always had an open ear to help someone. Sorry I didn't hear about this sooner. What a great guy and a life well lived. Meant a lot to get a comment from Bob on here.

Don't know how I missed this......Bob was the best! A great and positive contributor to the forum. Pulled pretty amazing times as he gracefully aged. I always enjoyed how he would pull LWT and HWT WR's and refer to himself as "Skinny Bob" and "Fat Bob". I had the good fortune to meet him at CRASH B's in 2015 where we talked for about an hour. 90 years old and as crisp, clear, and intellectual as anyone; a walking history book of rowing. He lived a full and long life and I feel honored to have met him.

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I first met Bob at Xeno Muller's rowing studio, the Iron Oarsman. Later, we each bought a model D at the Beach Sprints and Bob helped me figure out how to get mine into my car.

While I haven't seen him in person in years, it was a joy to know that I could talk with him here. He was a delightful gentleman and I will miss him here.

I too am saddened to hear this news. Bob wrote to me on here and told me about his early days rowing in heavy wooden skiffs. We also chatted about his experience rowing in 8s, and, of course, talked about ergs. I wish he were still around so he could give me some advice now that I've finally managed to get out onto the water. Bob will be missed.

One more thing about Bob Spenger, making him a bit more amazing for his athleticism in his older years.

Bob had bypass surgery at about age 57.
He very kindly encouraged me to continue to row and erg after my own bypass surgery.

Amazing guy.
