Taff Attack
Absolutely, Mrs T!!!!I will try again this week. I am sure I CAN get below 43 now.
When aiming for hard targets, I usually post on a white board:
My current PB & av pace
A target based on PB-?? seconds & result (beat so-and-so, or ranking #)
A harder target based on PB-??+ seconds (" ")
End target & av pace required to hit it
As I go along I can see which target is the one I am really going to go for, based on how the row is going (monitor on av. pace.) If I'm really struggling just to meet my old PB I focus on that with the next one as a 'hope for'--if I have any strength left at the last 300m, try to sprint for it. If I'm on target to get the average down for the 2nd fastest goal I focus on that, try to pretend it's not faster than I'm used to, and make myself hold back on speeding up to much too soon. The main thing is convincing myself that it is relaxing and that all I have to do is keep doing what I'm doing. If I've made the average pace needed for the second fastestby 500m--300m to go then the tank gets emptied completely in the attempt to hit the end goal and the only thing that works is counting strokes for each 100 (by that time, it's not 10/100, it's more like 13). By that time the only number I can see on the monitor is the average pace and all I care about is making it say the pace it has to say to get the time I want.
You CAN do it!!! Post your plan here for us to see before you sit down to erg and then let us know how you make out! We're rooting for you!

I got my 1 million metres T shirt and certificate today
They are pretty quick at getting these out in Aus.
Also tried a 10K last night and gave up after 1.3K - couldn't get enough air in Then woke up this morning with a stinking cold, so not much from me for a few days. Best to get it now rather than the start of the new season.
What are the dreams/resolutions/goals for the new season, here are a few from me.
Get Taff Attack back to 66 members (need 12)
Get the Taff Attack average to 2 million metres per member
7:20 for 2K
row a marathon
try and row 8K a day all year
7,500 on Nonathlon
get into Boat II in a CTC
20 days left
All the best

WCS will be at my house in about an hour and a half to like explain everything etc. Have tried to post a picture in my avatar but it wont accept it, something to do with size or such, will try againPaul B wrote:Fatty? moi.....Charmingmumbles wrote: I will definatley do a 10k this month, though i very much doubt i will get into Taff1 now that Phil and Paul are back, even if one is fat and the other crippled

Owen - As you've made it onto WCS, don't you think you really ought to try and get in boat 1, because it can't be good for your cred if you are kept out by fatty and cripple, who are also both old enough to be your father
Cheers
Fatty
PS - when are you going to post a picture of yourself? come on don't be shy
Owen
Update- WCS here in 30-40mins, picture (dodgy one) of me is now in Taff Diary, still cannot get it to go to my avatar though something about the file being too large and/or photo is too many pixels long/wide, whatever?
Had another attempt this morning but made the mistake of rowing too soon after breakfast. I only made 3500m. Am I supposed to be logging these metres somewhere
Can't decide whether to row before breakfast and possibly not have enough energy or leave till later on. Was trying to rush it today as had to take Kids to see "yours mine ours" at the cinema- oh I just love the school holidays.
Can't tell you what my plan is Carla as I don'y have one apart from keeping my average pace below 2.09. I will just wing it again.
Not sure how you write down your splits whilst rowing 10k. Not good at rowing one handed. If I suss it out I will be able to drink water as well

I always struggle with morning rows and could not row a good 10k in the morning. All my best rows are in the afternoon/evening but I think it's what your body gets used to. I don't think you'll do any good rowing before breakfast - you'll not have enough energy.
My plan for a 10k, is to decide what ave split I am aiming for. Then aim to row the 1st 1k 1-2 secs above your target to get the body properly warmed up (so tonight I wanted to go sub 1.49 so I aimed to do the 1st 1k in 1.50-1.51), from there I simply try and negative split gradually through the whole row and hope to hit my target with about 3-4k to go. From there I either try and hold on or press on depending how I feel - I think the key to 10k is consistent pacing throughout.
As regards writing splits down - you don't need to - the machine records it for you and you recall them at the end- ask Phil I'm sure he knows how. If not PM me and I'll try and describe how.
Chin up...you'll do it next time
Fitness is starting to return....hallelujah
Was aiming to go sub 36mins by the end of the week, and to my surprise managed it tonight. Funny isn't it how you sometimes row well when you least expect it?
Finished with 1.47.4 or 35.49.6 and felt really strong. My PB is 35.31.1 so I'll be looking for a PB by the end of the month.
So it's over to you now Owen...lets see if you can compete with Fatty If you're aiming for a 6.20 2k in the near future, I reckon you definately need to be sub 36mins for 10k...let's see what you can do.
Phil, my crippled friend - not heard much from you in the last few days, how are you getting on, lets put some pressue on the team superstar of the future

Helen,
Rowing News has a good article (Volume 13 Number 3, May 2006 - 'Sports Nutrition tidbits')on pre-exercise eating. Haven't tried it...but here it is:
0.5 gram carb/lb body weight on hour pre-exercise
1.0 gram carb/lb two hours pre-exercise
1.5 gram carb/lb three hours pre-exercise
2.0 gram carb/lb four hours pre-exercise
Seems like alot, but I'm guessing the athletes that they're speaking of here aren't just sitting down and doing a 2k and then getting off.

Thats all very well but if all you can look at is your average pace over the whole row whilst rowing then what relevance do the splits have?Paul B wrote:Helenmrs T wrote:Can't tell you what my plan is Carla as I don'y have one apart from keeping my average pace below 2.09. Top row Paul, nice to see boat 1 back in the medals.
Mrs T, you can log you metres at http://www.concept2.com/sranking03/log. ... Message=OK
If you affiliate to Taff Attack when you register your metres go toward the team.
Cant remember exactly how you do that but I'm sure Citroen or Daren will help if you get stuck
Cheers, Paul
