Bad Coach

Post by brad_herring » January 22nd, 2015, 9:45 pm

I am a novice sophomore in high school and would like some help answering a question. The coach of our club has no idea what she is talking about with anything including rowing even though she has been doing this for years. I realize I am a novice and have a lot to learn, but I can honestly say I have done more physiological and psychological research than her. She makes us pull a 2k test every single Tuesday mixed with various CrossFit workouts (don't even get me started  ), which anyone in their right mind would not do for various reasons for the athletes. We hardly do any endurance work and maybe go on the water once or twice a month but I'm hoping that will change in the Spring. She also puts a heavy emphasis on weightlifting and yoga which are both good to COMPLEMENT endurance training, but should not be all a crew focuses on. Anyways, the question is, since I am the founding member, the first member, and first captain of my high school's crew and beginning to recruit more people, would it be wise for me to stay with my team, or join a different club like Sarasota Crew who will most likely benefit my future more? It won't be until after this season but maybe starting next fall. Thanks.

I did crew for a local highschool in my Junior year in 04. Stanton College Prep had 2 coaches, both of which knew exactly what to do. They pushed us HARD, but also mixed up activities between endurance and sprints. I don't remember our exact routine, but we had a mix of, running, pullups, other arm exercises, erg sprints and endurance rows, but our biggest part of training was being on the water. Didn't matter if it was hot or cold, we were on the water. I remember one day it was about 50 outside, and I was practicing in a single. Balance has never been my forte, and lets just say I toppled over into the water. 50 outside and being wet is no fun. I asked the coach on water if I could dock to grab my towel and dry off. She gave me the ok, however when I pulled up to the dock, my other coach on the dock was like "What the hell are you doing?!". I told him the other coach said I could dry off really quick. He said if I wanted to dry off, I should row faster to heat up. Needless to say.....he built character in us. As well at the end of each practice we did a TON of stretching.

I would possibly tell your coach to research how other teams train and incorporate what the winning teams do. You mention possibly going to Sarasota, which implies you're in FL? I remember during many competitions we went against Leon county....I think we wooped their butts many times, but my memory isn't the best.

TL:DR Endurance MUST be integrated into the routine, otherwise during competitions, you're going to have people who can't even do 2 or 3 races due to exhaustion.
