heavyweight vs lightweight

Post by gsedun » March 25th, 2006, 11:33 pm

I am having some trouble with my wieght class...currently i am 16 and am around 6ft. I weigh around 176 and am one of the fastest rowers on my crew...so on to the problem. I classify myself as a middlewieght, but the problem is im the only middlewieght on my crew and obviously there are no races in that category. so what should i do. should i bulk up with muscle and become heavyweight, become lightweight which i imagine would be unsafe cause i am not a lightweight build or i could stay where i am. I guess the biggest problem is that the fastest boat which i am in is all lighweight except for me, so i cause them to race heavywieght

If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it...especially any former olympians

Keep doing what you are doing, it sounds quite productive. By your description, it would likely be detrimental to your own performance to attempt a 16lb weight loss, and there is no reason to make an additional effort at "bulking up" in particular, just keep working and you will get what you need.
Continue to improve your own performnace and coaches will have a spot for good athletes. We like to field the fastest boats we can, it doesn't matter what weight the folks are that make up the boat.

You are 16 year. So youre body is not fullgrown, you will become heavier over the next years. Lgwt is out off the question.
Focus on healty food and good training. Your weight will find it's own way.
