The "When is a PB not really a PB" question.

Post by Carl Watts » June 22nd, 2010, 6:41 pm

I'm relatively new here so I have recently noticed that after reading the PB sigs there appears to be a couple of schools of thought on recording PB's

I'm not intending to push this on anyone else but to my way of thinking your PB's are related to the current season.

I guess another and perhaps better option now I think of it would be to keep your PB's relavent to you current age group classification as per the C2 rankings and that way it does avoid alot of blanks for the first few months every year and it's just keeps popping up as a reminder for you to beat it ! !

With you able to hopefully Erg for a number of decades it seems of little point to me putting up your PB's of over 10 to 15 years ago for example for anyone reading the forum as it appears as misleading information as to what is acheivable for your age.

Any thoughts ? Am I just splitting hairs ? Is there an accepted format that I should follow that I don't know about ?

Split them into season's bests and personal (lifetime) bests (and you too can hark back to performances seven years ago like someone we all ignore).

For cycling time trials in the UK the CTT wants your best time in the last three years which is another way of looking at it.

I've not done a rowing PB since 2006.

A pb is an pb. And that's the best you ever did.
With aging pb's are not possible anymore, but I don,t see a reason why you should not put them in your sign, if you want to. I don,t see the point in doing that, so I don,t show my pb's.
Doug (Citroen) solution seems fine.
I use the nonathlon to put in my season best.

A PB has to be relative to your age or I would find that there is no point in me going all out for one. I Need the motivation to continue to improve and eclipse the previous result.

Going with the C2 Ranking system so PB's 40-49 years old for me and will see how that works out, after all the sig is really only a constant reminder to inspire me to Erg faster. :D

Not to me, I simply accept the fact that aging will cause slowing down after around 40.
Age group pb s are fine and there is not much wrong with them. Although when you set good results at age 40, you will break those after 45 anymore.
If you only go fo pb's you won't last long, it's better to focus on generell health and having fun.
Sports is about doing the best you can, and to be the best, you have to do in your prime.

It's hard to "train" to do erg pieces, even the 2K for competitions, especially with all the other fun stuff (cycling and OTW rowing are way more fun than sitting on an erg, duh), not to mention getting older, so actual PBs for me are all history. What I try to do each year is get above the 75th percentile in the C2 rankings, or around 940 points on the Nonathlon, for each event - which is definitely challenging for me! If I can do that every year, then I'll be satisfied that I'm reaching my "PBs".
