Finally got on board -even if with a dated model B

Post by tallsaul » December 2nd, 2008, 2:12 pm

Welll I am gettin used to this forum. I had typed out one post and managed to make it disappear. I found a Model B in great shape locally for a great price and had ta get it. I used a newer model at the Y a few times a year or so back but don't care for the club setting.

I figure that I will see if this becomes a coatrack or not. I am a "little guy" at 6'5" and 300 and it seems to be fine other than I may need a wider handle if my legs are supposed to fit in the window yopur arms make ;)

I need batteries to see if the PM1 works or not.

Can a regular computer be hooked up to the rower and just bypass the pm?

The little rowin I have done feels good- its good to move! I have the instruction dvd coming.

If I end up liking it and using it I can sell and upgrade this summer.

Your legs aren't supposed to fit in the window. The arms should remain outstretched until your legs are straight. After you've straightened your legs, pull the arms in. On the return trip the order is reversed - the knees don't start to come up until after the handle has passed them.

I understand that the handle is out past that point- I was meaning the side to side after the handle extended. Its ok but a bit tight is all. My arms form more of a triangle than they remain parrallel at the extended point.

TallSaul,

Dont' grip so close to the middle of the handle. Also, your shoulders may be wider than others, causing your arms to naturally narrow just to reach the handleI. f you have the old wooden handle, you might need to grip it with your pinkies over the ends. Some folks on this board with Model B's like the original handles, but I prefer the newer handles like the ones on the Model Ds. for me the newer handle just feels better. I'm also used to it becasue I do use a Model D at my gym for some of my workouts. You can order one and a conversion kit from C2.

If you're mechanically inclened, dig around on these boards for some of John Rupp's posts on his alterations of his Model B. John used the old handle I believe but modified the grips.

Eventually you should try to upgrade to a PM2 for bettercalculations of your efforts. If you're going to do any on line or computer software training such as RowPro or Erg Monitor, you'll need at least a PM2+

I am already holding it with my pinkies hanging off :D

I am definately mechanically inclined. I have a metal shop and woodworking capabilities and have already started to scheme... I likely will order the new handle though for what it costs. I am also gonna make a new brackett for the monitor to get it closer to read it.

Thanks for the info guys!

Be Blessed-paul

TS

Definitely get in touch with John then. Find one of his posts and send him an email. He's done a lot of reconfiguration on erg peripheries. I'm sure he'll be glad to chat and share.

Saul -

Don't know if yr Mod B has any of these retrofits, but
..flex footplates; definately a good thing! the original equipment wooden heel rest is a major ankle chafer.
..roll-about wheelies; nice to have, makes machine easier to move
..curved plastic handle; got one when I went thru the second set of foam grips for the straight wood handle; the anhedral curve helps get the handle over my knees (74 inch tall, 34 inch inseam, 36 inch sleeve length); the curve cants the wrists and the twist seems to follow up the arm giving some folks elbow pain; i often use a three-finger hook grip to get the wrists straighter; added length allows hands wider grip; just takes some getting used to
..might as well order out some rollers and bearings for the seat at the same time. check the chain; they do stretch.

at about 8 megameters i did a major overhaul with drive sprockets and flywheel gears also. PM3 a bit later when the original display failed. put on a square seat a month ago when the kidney shaped seat developed some cracks.
