Concept 2 for kids

Hi guys.... I love my C2 and it has helped me to shed a few lbs and now my wife is on the C2 3-4 times a day to keep fit as well. Finally there is a fitness machine/ activity we both love to do!

Now the kids want to get on the C2 as well.... I told them that I will ask fellow forumers for some advice first... and let them know if they can get on the C2 and have some fun, too!

Kids are 10 and 9... the youngest is 4 so... he can wait :-)

I am pretty sure they can start rowing... any suggestions? programs? on-line competitions for the kids??

Children can use a C2 safely, but you have to be super extra careful to teach them proper technique. I coach 11+ year olds; their universal problem when they first get onto an ergo is that they want to impress their friends by how far/fast they can row. You have to have firm discipline from the first moment that they sit on the ergo so that they don't do anything to injure their vulnerable bodies.

I would suggest that you only allow them to start with the traditional sequence of consecutive minutes of: arms only; arms and body; arms and body with the knees rising by only a few inches from the slide [quarter slide]; arms and body with the knees rising to 90 degrees [half slide]; and finally, arms and body with the knees rising until the shins are vertical [full slide].

Discourage them from rowing fast until they have proper technique imprinted indelibly in their brains.

Kids can definitely erg. My littlest actually has the most meters of the 3 - he has over 90K lifetime and has enjoyed collecting the childrens' meter club pins. You can file for those on the same form that you file for your own million meter club. Full info is here: http://www.concept2.com/us/motivation/a ... sclubs.asp.

Definitely make sure they learn proper form. Depending on their size, you may see some very high stroke rates. I didn't know the SPM could get close to 60. :lol: That was when my youngest was 5 or 6. Now his rate is down to approx 40.

My oldest, on the other hand, is on the verge of beating my times. :oops: Still has a bit to go to catch his Dad.

(reviving a rather old thread)

What procedure did you follow to get the Kids Distance Award? I sent in a copy of my nine year-old's log to the address specified a month ago, plus followed up by e-mail to Concept2's customer service address last week, and have received no response whatsoever. To say the kid is disappointed would be an understatement!
