Intro Newbie

Post by dragonfly » May 15th, 2008, 1:35 pm

Hi everyone,

Just a short intro to get me started. I am female 64 years and have a new Concept 2 model D scheduled for delivery on the 19th. I live in Southern California in the San Fernando Valley. I heard about the Concept on another exercise forum and decided to check out rowing. I have an ocean kayak that I paddle around in on the lake in the summer. I have always been drawn to the shells and sculling although I have never seen any in person, just on TV. I think the Concept will be the closest thing to it for me at this time. I am looking forward to finding a team to join and get started with some challenges. Wish I could get in on the Blue Moon one but I will just have to wait and learn to use the rower first and get my stamina built up. I can hardly wait for the UPS truck to get here.

Welcome Dragonfly!
Despite my moniker I am on the far side of 50, started erging in January, and bought a Model E a while back. Now over 600,000 meters on the erg, and been taking " Learn to Row " lessons for the past month. I think you will be impressed with the workout you can get erging. The logbook is a great motivator, as are the C2 challenges.
I would urge you to find a club and take some OTW lessons- it is a challenge but a lot more fun than erging. Good luck, and let us know how you do!

Welcome aboard. You are close enough that you should contact Xeno and go over the iron oarsman for a workout (maybe even a free lesson). He can make sure your technique is solid to start.

Hi Susan,

You're a mere youngster. My first time sculling or rowing was when I took a learn to row course at age 67. I agree with still33. You'll have a head start with balancing a single because of your kayaking background. Most rowing clubs offer learn to row courses. For example

http://www.longbeachrowing.org/

You should be warned that sculling or sweep rowing can be highly addictive.

A lesson from Xeno Muller would be fabulous. Also, he has some DVD's that are great fun. He uses slides on his indoor rowing DVD's but you don't need slides to use his DVD's. His enthusiasm is contagious and I never get bored using the C2 while watching one of his DVD's.

Thank you all for the welcome.

Yes I am very much wanting to take sculling lessons and checked out the longbeach website. I wonder if they are participating in the learn to row day on June 7th. I have tried to talk my girlfriend into going with me but she is not interested. I just bought Xeno's dvd's off ebay and am looking forward to using them. I even mentioned to hubby while ago that we should take a trip to Costa Mesa. I will be on vacation next week and may give Xeno a call and arrange to go for a lesson. My kayak doesn't require much balancing as it is a sit on top but I do still windsurf at the lake and that does require a bit of balance.

Got my first blister today on my hand, so looks like I am well on my way. So far I love my Concept and would really like to try the slides.
