not the best writing, especially compared to SI's generally high standards - but it's nice to see.

Awesome exposure. Gonna be a great event. Junior sign-ups are through the roof this year. Otherwise, tentative erg assignments are up, and I have a pretty good idea of who's going to win the Open Men...

I'm speaking of course of Angel Fournier Rodriguez, bronze and silver medalist in the M1x at the 2013 and 2014 world championships (on-the-water). Is he stopping by to set a new world record...? Or simply to pick up the title?

I think the record is safe, but he will probably win.

You already qualify! Just sign up next year (or get really strong, win, and have your satellite regatta send you. That's the hard way). One of these years, we're going to align a vacation to my wife's family with this event and I'll do it.

Well done to everyone who did, I'm already searching for results! Post if you find them first...

I watched from the stands. He started out "slow" so right away I pretty much knew there would be no new world record, and I was a little disappointed. But the TURBO he turned on in the second 1000 was AMAZING. Here are his splits:
1:29.2
1:27.6
1:25.2
1:23.9
(5:45.9)

How awesome would it be to start "slow" at 1:29. Mike the qualifying for our age group to be sent is like 6:07.

I wonder how his rating evolved throughout the race.

Those splits suggest that with an optimal effort he might be able to go sub-5:40.

6:07 to be 'sent' to nationals is fast... for this fat-boy it's REALLY fast! :o

I am not ready to say I can't get there - but I am ready to train differently, so I can improve my time.

I can 'see' being under 7:00, but <1.32's, geeze louise... I am just not physically there. I may be looking at the next age bracket :(.

That is an amazing time... how does this monster do this?

From what I remember he started out in the 30's and then went into the low to mid 40's near the end and was getting faster and faster. I think I saw 45's but I might be mistaken. It's too bad not all Olympic rowers publish there 2K's. We'd probably see a lot of times in this range.

Marco
