I am very pleased to anounce the third annual Boston ERG Marathon will be held at the Newton Wellesley Hospital on Patriots day, April 21. The event is held at the hospital which is at about mile 17 of the other marathon that runs that day. Participants row on ERGs set up along side the race course. Individuals rowing the full marathon or teams rowing in relay are welcome. As in past years, this event supports the Newton Wellesely Hospital Breast Center and our breast cancer research program. Participants can be sponsored for the row. This year we will be asking a minimum of $100 per entrant.
Rowers in this event have set one world record (60-69yrs) and one #2 world time (30-35yr)
Schools and rowing clubs are welcome. Local prep crews have enjoyed the event.
Rowers are welcome to bring their own ergs, or row on machines we supply.
Interested parties should contact Fred Millham (
fmillham@partners.org)
Help us line Route 16 with rowers this year and support breast cancer research!

We have a large number of entrants this year, but always room for more.
Watch the hoofers plod by while both knocking off a marathon row and doing a good deed supporting breast cancer reseach and screening.
Drop me an email if you are interested.

Hi Fred,
Best wishes for a great event. I'm glad to hear that you already have several signed up.
This year I'll be doing mine in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Dave Nock of the Hard Nock's Gym is organizing one in conjunction with the Amesbury Police Dept to raise money for Dana Farber, where Dave himself has been treated recently for cancer. So far there are at least four of us scheduled to do it. Dave, Gary Passler, Gene Burnham, and me.

This is a great event! If you are tempted to even row part of a marathon, you should email Fred and check this out. You will have fun, and help support a great cause.

Just up the road from Fred's Newton Wellesley Erg Marathon, (and about 55 miles south of the 1st annual Amesbury Erg Marathon), we staged the 5th annual Nobles School Erg Marathon to raise scholarship funds. We were stationed at mile 12 of the Boston Marathon course thanks to the wonderful generosity of a member of the school community.
We had a slightly smaller turnout this year, but much better weather than last year. A total of 12 rowers tallied 221,887 meters.
One ambitious oarsman (and a former Olympic medal winner) choose to ride his bike to the race with his erg on the back
Hard to make it easier to erg than this...
By coincidence, a Korean company (with a bunch of runners in the race) set up camp in front of the tent and proceeded to spur everyone on with an amazing drum session. A wild scene...
(Click on photo below for video version...)
So it was a ton of fun. Thanks to RowPro (and a pace boat based on my results from last year), I was able to cut 17 secs off my previous best time. (Kudos to Pete and his gang down in NZ for building such a cool software program.)
Time to get on the water...

Rumor has it they broke a record for most marathons completed in a single location...perhaps the Guiness Book of Records folks have him tied up...

Sorry for the delay in posting these results. The Third Annual Newton Wellesley Hospital Boston ERG Marathon was a resounding success this year. We had 57 participants rowing a total of 23 marathons.
That equals 970,485 Total meters
Six guys rowed the whole way themselves. The list included Frank Knight and Paul Flack who have now rowed in all three events, and Robert Lee who is on his second. Paul edged out Robert by three seconds. at 2:49:37. Chad Gross pulled a very respectable 2:53 in his first appearance.
Special recognition goes to Josh Rubin, an expert in breast cancer genetics, who had never rowed a stroke before tackling the 42,195m distance. Unbeleivable grit.
Nancy Barry, sensibly, rowed an HM at home. This strategy avoided sun burn but also some of the je ne sais q'ois of the actual event.Community Rowing appeared in force with no fewer than 4 women's teams and a men's team. Special Notice goes to Allison Armstrong who was not satisfied with rowing a relay leg, so she added an individual Half Marathon for the fun of it.
Newton South Highschool brought a platoon of young men who knocked of two marathons in relay. None of these kids are rowers, their determination to finish was inspiring. The Belmont Hill School Varsity Crew returned for a second year. This rowing juggernaut supplied not only 9 relay teams, but superb musical support and what can best be described as a fashion show of minimalist rowing uni's for the benefit of a substantial crowd who gathered to watch the runners but were distracted by the buff gents from BHS.
A huge thank you to all of the participants who made the event so terrific, and also to Sam Millham, Dottie Bump and Dana Dowd who ran the affair with style and determination.
