Anyone going to C.I.R.C.?

Post by marathonoflife » January 1st, 2007, 9:05 pm

Feb. 4th 2007, Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships
in Toronto Ontario,

anyone going?

I sent in my registration cheque last week
and will be attending the whole day (my category races @ 11AM) because
I will be purchasing one of the erg.'s after the races,

Soon I can row all day without leaving the house!
(till now, need to take a 2 hr return trip to the closest facility with a erg.
which I do 6 days a week to use the erg.)

Minna,

Wow, that is some dedication. A two hour trip 6 days a week to erg! Just think when you get your model D, you will have an extra 12 hours a week to train!! Good Luck at the CIRC!

I'm going

I'm going to the CIRC this year. It will be about my 4th time, I think.

I'm not really a rower, so before this year I've only entered the Novice 1000m division. Yep, I'm a chicken. This year I'm thinking of trying my first 2k race. I am NOT looking forward to it, but I am training for it.

Good luck!
Look behind you.

Hey Big Fishy,
How did it go for you?

for me:
In the end, I came home with a gold medal.

unfortunately due to several cascading unforeseen circumstances,
I was TOTALLY off my pace,
off my stroke rate,
off my split times AND
did 1.1 seconds slower the my Nov. Rowing Canada erg. monitoring test (and 12.8 sec.'s slower then my PB in training! UGH!)

*the worst snow storm my coach Cal has ever driven through,
took a 30 min. section of the highway 1hr 25 min.
I arrived @ 10:10AM (race @ 11am).
(original estimated arrival time was to be 9:30am)

* having never been allowed to use 'clamps' to create a stationary seat,
once I used the toilet (nervous stomach by then)
and registered, I had 20 min. prior to the race to warm up.

Placing the clamps for the first time was a challenge, to which Cal's strength was beyond tha abilities of the clamps to hold up (so one broke), and the seat as slightly too far ahead ( knees too bent-high then what i practiceda at), so we quickly had to duck tape the seat into pace
(thank goodness for the cooperation of the race directors to permit it), [we called it the Northern Ontario erg. repair method ala the "Red Green Show" ]

by then it was 10 min. to race time.

warmed up for 7 of it, went to my 'lane' and had 3 min. to warm up there.

Nerves were so bad, I thought i was going to puke or piss my pants.

predominantly due to all the prior circumstances, AND the HUGE amount of spectators
(in road races, the spectators are scattered, not 1000 peope in one large room with 62 l rowing machines, super loud squeeky voiced announcer-annoying to the extreme ).

My start was as I planned,
i was planning to go throughout with a 2:21-2;20 split
bringing me in @ 4:40 finish
(10.7 secs faster then my first test),
@ at 35-37 stroke rate.

I was "ok to start, then i somehow lost concentration due the screaming lady (announcer),
jumped up to a 41-44 stroke rate,
fell down to a 2:25.3 -2:30 split,
until 80 metres at which time ave. split was still up at 2:25.9,
with that higher stroke rate,
I had used up too much energy and didnt have it in me to pull my final time down ...
so I ended up ath 2:52.8
(1.1 secs slower then my last test and 11.1 secs slower then my PB in training : ( )

Yet qualfied me for first place still in my disability category.

then after Alison the Adaptive team Canada co-ordinator took a lot of time to talk to me.

her points were:

* I had good posture, kept my head up throughout it, didnt look like i was 'loosing it' (like I felt",though -and I see from the photos Victor kindly shared, that my head was 'looking up to heave for help' more then once!)
she said my 'reach for the catch' was good,

ONLY constructive criticism she had was to 'watch out' to
not lean back so far during the finish part of the stroke.
she said to regular rowers they do not want them to swing back at all due to lower back injury potential,
but adaptive rowers need that 'momentum' of the swing to propel ourselves forward so they expect a bit of swing back but to start paying atttention to it.

She also taught me how to work with the resistnace tubing/ropes i have so that i can work on the difference in hand motion in sculling
(during the catch the hands are far apart unlike on erg. where you cant).

She said considering it was my first
'race' i did 'exceptional'.

AND a (local club which initially didn't want anything to do with adaptive rowing) Sudbury Rowing club executive member came and watched me! he drove through that blizzard to see me.Amazing!

he said he wants to become an adaptive rowing coach, and we will get together and get the program hopefully by next summer.
I will row with Barrie (met her, and the barrie arms only rower-he also playes sledge hockey with the national team!)

Team Canada Olympic Women were getting slipts that were out of this world!

Seeing them erg was phenominal.

and seeing the strategy of the winner (kept herself 'neck and neck' with the second place woman until 1500 m and then basically blew her our of the water by 300m left to go in the end. -same strategy as xeno muller swiss gold winner (96-atlanta).

My muscles were tense/tight and i had a knot (physically can feel it ) on my adbomen, Cal says its muscle related not a 'growth' of some sort.
it is painfull to the touch.
but my massage therapist discvered it was cartlidge lodged out of place from between my ribs. its ok now - think

my neck was super tense moving it was painful.

Ater i felt like a 'wreck' in comparison to the 1/2 marathon I raced.

A women gave a GIFT! a shirt that says "you row like a girl. Good for you!"

Now since getting my own erg. at home I have been rowing insanely much...
until ast week weight training, bench pressing 100 lbs 4th set, rep #10 my left arm gave away on me-totally.
nothing subtle about it, it happened as if i had no arm.
To distinquish wether it was tricept or bicept, i tried some arm curls...
after a few reps my muscles started to tremor very severely.
stopped everything.

it turns out its a 1st degree tear of the rear deltoid.
tricept took over the load and gave out, to save itself i guess.
scar tissue the size of my thumb is forming on that delt now.

but have been able to start rowing slowly.
very good rehab. rowing is.
very good.

I LOVE MY ERG!

Congratulations on the win!! Also on the very good race, even if it wasn't the time you hoped for. With all the other challenges and distractions, it was a very good time.
