Indoor Erg Racing View Screen

Post by Chaz1980 » April 12th, 2024, 7:32 pm

Just a quick question regarding the viewing screens at the BIRC and WIRC. From the footage I've seen on YouTube etc are competitors able to actually see their positions in the race on a screen in relation to everyone else? The reason I ask is that from what I can see online, the viewing screens showing the competitor placings seemed to be positioned for the benefit of the spectators and not the competitors.
From the images I've seen online, all the ergs appeared to be facing away from the 2 x main viewing screens at the BIRC, meaning the crowd can see them clearly but not the competitors.
Apologies if this is a daft question, I'm just curious if competitors are simply required to 'race' flat out whilst not actually knowing their relative position during the race, if so, then it's not really a race if you can't adjust your pace accordingly in relation to the opposition.

That's all part of the racing software. https://www.concept2.com/service/software/ergrace
Which has an online manual at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Thl ... NZoe4a3770

Each erg gets this display: https://www.concept2.com/files/pdf/us/v ... isplay.pdf (which is the same between the old Venue Racing software and the newer Ergrace software)

So even if you can't see the big screen with details of all the rowers you can see your relative position within the race.

Thank you so much. The last time I did an indoor competition was 2002. Technology had clearly advanced since then it seems.

The screen display for competitors hasn't changed a bit, it was the same on the old PM3s (from 2003-2014). So you may have missed that if your old erg in 2002 only had a PM2+ (the + version was needed for racing).
