If you look at the ages on the list of members of the team called the Ancients, you will see that most of them are, indeed, past the usual age of retirement and many have amassed an amazing number of kilometers.

80000 meters, 6+ hours rowing, every single day for 20 days straight. I can't imagine putting my body through that even if I had the time.

Sorry but I take all those metres with a pinch of salt.
Yes they may be retired and have all day but they are also old. Until Concept 2 makes all the rows you enter as IND_V or people start to get on RowPro where the entire public can see the rows and the results including pace etc online then I'm a cynic sorry.
Anyone who has done a Challange knows how hard it is to maintain a high average, miss a day and it takes a week at an even higher km's a day to make up for it.
Concept 2 need to remove the manual meters entry or set-up something that recognises those rowing verified meters on a separate competition. I would be happy to enter one of these events a year but cannot be bothered entering the standard challanges at present.
My pick is that suddenly all those high metre rowers will come up with some sort of excuse why they cannot enter. The classic is but "Oh my old PM2 doesn't connect to Rowpro or have IND_V" well my response would be time to buy a new monitor and stop penalising everyone else who wants to enter and try and come in with a top placing without cheating !

I agree with the removing manually entered meters. I have had several people at a local gym ask me why not just add a little more to each row. Well, its called honor.
I work a more than full time job and even rowing 15K a day is virtually impossible. I rowed my first marathon the other day (dismal results due to Flu) just to catch up to the first place guy on my team. No way I can see anyone rowing more then that daily.. Like it was just said.. Cynical..
Also, as pointed out, age.. I look at the ages of most on here, the competition. A lot are of retirement age. More time in a day than some know what to do with!
Well.. Guessing I'll finish this with around 450K. I see MANY on the first place team have far surpassed that already. I wish them the best.. I'll be happy with my measly amount...

IND_V is no solution. There are over 150,000 meters a day put on the machines where I row. I could just gather up the info for the top 8 or 10 distance rows each day and enter it as my own. No Problem. On the other hand take a look at the annual meters honor board, look at the top producers and then look at previous years, you see the same people. It seems to me that anyone cheating is going to a lot of time and effort to scam you even if they never row a single meter.
I have been on this forum since its start (my number is 60) and this topic makes the rounds every couple of years, and there are always a few 'cynics'. The other thing that never changes is that there is no way to guarantee complete honesty from everyone so get over it. If your that cynical and can't get over it, then stop participating, calling out anyone for cheating, even in general terms, without a single shread of evidence makes you look like a petty ass.

Hey.. in light of your incredible intelligence it was merely an observaton, as well as others..... For you to suegges "a single shred of evidence" is needed.. Are you that simple minded to realize these people arent going to openly admit to cheating on here?
I just viewed a team where several have 1.2M meters. To row that in such a short amount of time is almost unbelievable.
And for you to come on here and suggest that someone looks like a petty ass, well... Youve just put yourself in a whole different catagory. I view you as less than a "petty ass". If this wasnt a public forum where I could potentially get banned id surely let you know what I actually thought... Thanks for your 2 cents though.
Oh and bravo on your 60. It truly means so so much to me to have conversation with such a legend as yourself.

Why all the vitriol. All I did was point out that IND_V can be scammed, this has been known for a long time, it is not intelligence but experience that tells me this. I said I have been around this forum for a long time and I illustrated that with my membership number as evidence that I have seen this topic make the rounds periodically (if you doubt me, dig into the archives, it's all there), since I don't post a lot, I am hardly a legend, but I am man enough to post my real name and stand up for what I have to say.
I find a lot of human achievement unbelievable, I was an olympic style weightlifter for a time and can not concieve how anyone could hoist 500 pounds above their head, but it is done on a regular basis. i read a story about a marine a couple decades ago who was nicknamed Captain America, he liked to run, he entered a 200 mile team run, but he only had himself on the team, I think he came in second or third, the article said he ran at least a marathon every day. I've read stories and heard news reports where they say that many olympic athletes train in excess of 5 hours a day, and these are young people with jobs, friends and family, if they have the time, why not anyone else?
It is easy for people who are retired to have the time necessary to put in a lot of meters, the thing I don't understand is how they are not bored to death, 50,000 meters at a pedestrian 2:30 is a little over 4 hours (5 hours at a 3:00 pace), 4 or 5 shorter rows spread throughout the day is easy if you have nothing else to do. Just why is that so unbelievable. And yes, I believe that if you are going to call anyone out for cheating, you NEED evidence, innocent until proven guilty, remember.

A photo of the memory page at the end of the day should be enough.

I have no doubt, but that there are some who post false numbers, maybe even many, but I am sure that a lot of the numbers are real. I have known a few of the high number contributors personally and know their circumstances. Yes, it is possible for people to achieve those kind of numbers. I would find it too boring myself even if I were still capable of doing it, but I have respect for those who are really doing it. Those who submit false data are really only cheating themselves. Any one else that feels cheated is taking the whole thing too seriously.
Face it, there is no sure way to get valid numbers, short of doing it with some sort of supervision. The purpose of the challenges is to provide motivation for a large number of people spread out all around the globe, so that sort of supervision is not practical. If your motivation is to improve or maintain your fitness, or even to slow down the natural decline or aging, you are competing with yourself and that is enough. If you simply have to compete with others, things like the challenges and the nonathlon are not for you. Stick to public events where the numbers are proven.

Id like to row in a public competition. Curious to see where I'd fall amongst the others. Just started rowing not to long ago but im in pretty good shape to start.
I do find it somwhat boring.. I have a 40" with surround sound mounted in front of the rower lol..! Soon I will have Row Pro there so I can participate in real time races. At least think I can.
As far as posting those numbers, someone looking for proof going against the truth, I know its the old cliche of they are only cheating themselves.. Just disheartening when I row every meter that I post, I row my ass off, and then see someeone whose posting 6X's the amount that I have up? Im not slug, but I know Im not the fastest either but I cant wrap my mind around how someone rows 1.25M meters so far. Oh well.... Guess I have some catching up to do....

Maybe the problem is you're assuming too much. I did my last HM at a rate of 2:02.6/500, assuming I had the time and I could get by the boredom, I feel very confident that if I slowed down to 2:30, I could easily complete 60,000 meters in a day in 4 15,000 meter sessions 2 or 3 hours apart and I could do it day after day. I assume that anyone who is putting up these kind of distances is doing it at a very leisurely pace. To me, if the goal is distance, you row at an insanely slow pace to rack up insanely high meters.
I once tried to get myself on 100,000 meter ranking list. I felt I could do it by rowing 10,000 meters each hour for 10 hours at a 2:15 pace, that would give me 15 minutes each hour to rest, stretch and just be off the machine. I completed 50,000 that day, I just could not get myself to get on again. You have to remember that none of these challenges or the ranking lists say you have to do it in one session, for times events all you need to do is include the rest time.

This does not solve the problem. I row at a gym and could do multiple sessions a day on different machines, at the end I could take multiple pictures and pick out all those that add up to the number I want. I believe there is a member who works in a gym and is always near the top of the annual meters honor board, he rows 5 sessions per day and averages around 40k per day.
The only way I know of is to do things in public with independent observers. That is the only way that C2 will recognize records for the 2k.
