FMMC (Monthly challenge for ALL)

Post by Recess » October 6th, 2019, 11:59 am

Hey everyone,

I apologise for not coming back here and posting updates and results for the FMMC more often. I confess to being sucked in by the dark-side of Facebook, and letting the PHP forum side of communication slip completely.

For anyone who has no idea what the FMMC is - can I start by saying that although it's got FM in the name, it's not just for Fitness Matters rowers, and although I row for FM - it has nothing to do with them other than that it was our own monthly challenge which we decided to go 'global-team' with rather than keeping it to ourselves. It's growing in numbers, but we always need, and welcome more competitors.

Each month it's a different challenge. And through the year, it makes up all of the Concept2 ranked workouts apart from the 100m. Points are added up through the year, and on top of monthly winners, there are year winners too. But you're not just racing for yourself. Points also add up for teams and for your country. So no matter how well you do in the individual challenge, your points will always contribute to the team and country competition.

The final important part of the FMMC is that it's an adjusted 'handicapped' challenge. Unlike some other challenge, we've built the handicapping with a much more refined curve. This means that 20 year olds, 40 year olds and 80 year olds all compete on an even playing field. You will not be unfairly punished because you're a 30-40 year old heavyweight male. In fact, the Septmember challenge was as follows: 1st place - 30 year old HWT male. 2nd Place - 36 year old HWT male - 3rd place - 85 year old lightweight male.

We're always tweaking and improving this handicapping and other aspects of the competition - and welcome any feedback, especially if it's something that's keeping you back from signing up and being part of it.

This month, it's a 30 minute TT. And it would be great to see some new names on there. I've realised this community isn't a "Field of Dreams" style. I built it, and I just need more people to come. 84 people hit the 4 minute TT last month - so it's not like it's just Magnus and me rowing each month - but looking at the strength of numbers in the awesome CTC - there are a lot of people out there who enjoy online racing, and we'd love it if you'd be part of our competition too.

Happy rowing,
John

I have to admit I'd forgotten about the FMMC but I'll try and regularly programme it into my plans. I do like a 30 mins TT
51 HWT; 6' 4"; 1k= 3:09; 2k= 6:36; 5k= 17:19; 6k= 20:47; 10k= 35:46 30mins= 8,488m 60mins= 16,618m HM= 1:16.47; FM= 2:40:41; 50k= 3:16:09; 100k= 7:52:44; 12hrs = 153km

Understandable. We’re trying to get good traction with it. I’ll make sure to continue to post updates on here, just to try to jog some memories.

I didn't know this was a thing, but I think I want in. I tend to only show up on the C2 forums between fall and spring, and then disappear late spring/early summer. I spend the cold months on the rower, and the remaining time jogging and hiking mountains.

Little competitions are great to keep me motivated. Where do I follow this monthly challenge?

Hi!

It will be great to have you on board. Go to www.indoorrowinginfo.com/fmmc to find out more. One of the tabs is the registration tab.

Looking forward to seeing your results.

Fantastic!! If you’re a new rower, it can take a day for the score to show up. Initial registration to the database is a manual process - but once you’re in it updates instantaneously.

Thanks for being part of it!!

I've enjoyed messing about with the challenges John - many thanks for running it all - much as I do the CTC, IRL, Sub7 ITC, etc. A noticeable change for the FMMC this year is that you have moved away from duplicating the Indoor Rowing League schedule to set entirely your own pieces (that you say will cover all ranking distances). I've no issue at all with that, but just wondered on the thinking behind it and when you will time the longer and shorter pieces to crop up....??

Ah. Well we kinda rock in and out of the IRL. Sometimes we match what they do - other times not. For instance, it’s 1609 for IRL this month which isn’t a ranked distance, which is why we have swapped in the 30.

Here is the full schedule:
