The MAD team won the February challenge with MAD 2 finishing in bronze spot behind Germania.
Sub7, with nine crews, launched the highest number of boats.
GarageAthlete have the challenge for June. Next month, Te Waka Aotearoa have their first challenge and May's event is courtesy of RedLine Rowers.

For teams that have already set a challenge, the formula is to double the active months to their previous turn and add the number of boats launched in the current month. Whoever has the highest number of points gets the challenge.

For new teams, we allow a challenge when they launch a boat on three consecutive months. This doesn't happen automatically, the team has to contact me either here or on facebook. For instance Te Waka Aotearoa is a new team this season. They made contact and have the April challenge.

Joe

Andy Tomlinson has communicated the Te Waka Aotearoa challenge for April:

"Name: Control yourself
Row 10 minutes at r20
Rest 5 minutes
Row 10 minutes at r20
Restricted to r20, deduct 100m off your distance for every stroke per minute over
Your recorded score will be, the least distance rowed (slowest) of your two 10 minutes pieces (after any deductions if applicable)"

Joe

For this month’s challenge. I’ve prorated my time from a one hour piece I did recently as part of the World Erg Challenge. Is this allowed for the CTC like it is for the Nonathlon?

When this question has come up earlier, different views have been expressed and no consensus has been reached. it does not form part of our guidelines. Clearly, you can row a lot faster for a 6km than an hour. My advice would be to row another WEC piece with a warm-up, 6km trial and cool-down. There's still six days left in this challenge.

Otherwise it's "Don't ask, don't tell".

Joe

That's not allowed. You can't take a distance piece out of a timed workout.

Agreed. Unless you have software that allows you to extract the distance from the timed piece.

Ok, thank you Dougie and Joe. I shall do a 6k piece and make sure that it is a second or two faster.

Andy has added the following stipulation to the April challenge:

"Just 1 more addition to the above, would you please just be able to add r35 for the ski erg crew."

Joe

From the April CTChallenge:
Deduct 100 metres from your distance for every stroke per minute over 20.
Should we take this to mean an increase of stroke/‘ average over 20 for each of the two 10’ active periods as in previous restricted rate challenges? It is April after all. :D Hasn’t produced queries thus far but considering the Covid-related up tick of interest in IR fitness and comps, someone(s) with minimum experience of the “game” could possibly misinterpret as strokes exceeding 20 per each of ten minutes totalled—with disastrous penalties to recorded challenge meter total. Could the Long Haul Canoes be requested to clarify this term of their challenge, please? Also the PM row report is the final authority on rate average for purposes of determining penalties. Should this information—so obvious to the Old Guard—be included in terms and conduct of challenge?

You're overthinking it again.

The challenge is ten minutes and 200 strokes. If you set up the splits right you can row 209 strokes and the monitor will still show 20SPM for the whole workout (no penalty).

@ Citroen:
Doug, given that splits can be designated in continuous format but are not available in interval format on any PM with which I’m familiar, I believe I led several of my teammates by asserting that the strokes/‘ round downs and consequent free strokes would apply to the April challenge. I’m also clearly guilty of underthinking the terms of the challenge If it’s an interval challenge. I’ve looked at the challenge description three times now. 5’ rest implies interval format. Absence of the unambiguous 2x10’/R5’ notation leaves the door open to unintentional (or purposeful🤔) misinterpretation as two continuous 10’ pieces separated by a 5’ respite. Your suggestion that 209 strokes will round to 20 rate average for 10’ only IF 1’ splits are designated has helped me see that the Kiwi offering has to be an interval format challenge. I can’t recall if any past restricted- rate challenges were set as intervals. Think most must have been continuous distance.
