Other than the BIRC what UK based ergo comps are there?
Other than the BIRC what UK based ergo comps are there?
Whilst I'm doing erging right now to get some good "numbers" in training and break some old PBs, and get alot of personal satisfaction from it, it would make sense for me to start using the fitness I am gaining and meet more people involved in the sport by doing some competitions. About 10 years ago I did the BIRC at the Birmingham NIA, so I know about that one. I also found this one which is quite local to me:

...but what other ones are there? And which ones do YOU do? Be good to meet some forumites at some stage. Cheers...

This might help:
http://www.concept2.co.uk/indoor-rowers/racing/calendar
Unfortunately there was a good thread lost when ISS site went belly up which had a lot of them.
You could also look at the people on Sub7 FB page - they may have a list
Send a PM to Susan Young (I think she is here recently) who keeps a list of even the obscure European ones from all over the place.
Richard Cheeseman (the grand fromage) may also be lurking and had a list I think.
The EIRC in Manchester is the best attended of the regionals.

Cheers...I will. Just out of interest I see you are in Sydney, so I'd imagine there are plenty down under (seeing as though the common thought is Australia is "sports mad")?lindsayh wrote:This might help:

Re: Other than the BIRC what UK based ergo comps are there?
There is an active racing scene here though numbers are a problem as we are very widely spread and long distances to travel. Most race days have multiple events to cover all needs and keep everyone happyGammmmo wrote:Cheers...I will. We have more masters games here and in NZealand than in the northern hemisphere
We have seen some travellers come and race - the best one is probably the Pan Pacs on the Gold Coast of Queensland in November every 2 years.
The full calendar for this year is:

See you here sometime!
(I did the EIRC a few years ago and will be back in the next year or 2 to have a race somewhere.)

Re: Other than the BIRC what UK based ergo comps are there?
Does anyone know of any 2K events in the South East apart from the BIRC? I am toying with the idea of doing a competition, but starting at a national competition is a bit daunting.

Why not start big , I'll keep you company in the 40-49 age group, looking at last years results we'd both be well off the relagation zone.Pie Man wrote:Does anyone know of any 2K events in the South East apart from the BIRC? It is tempting, my sister-in-law lives close by so I should be able to park and walk to the event. There again I can only imagine the look my wife will give me when I mention it....

FWIW John and Piers (and sorry for the thread distraction) signing up for, going, and doing a race really is a great experience. Its really you against you anyway, but to do that with others is really neat.

Re: Other than the BIRC what UK based ergo comps are there?
If I was to enter I'd like to think I had a chance not to come last. Looking at the times from last year if I was to enter the LWT 40-49 I'd need a sub 7:30 and perhaps sub 7:10 to ensure that... Or I could enter the open LWT class and come in the top ten (there were only 9 entries last year, slowest time being 8:23) I have a bit of time to decide anyone else from this forum attending? I'd have to make sure I kept to 75Kg or less as if I crept over I could race but my time wouldn't count.

Re: Other than the BIRC what UK based ergo comps are there?
Interesting about going for the open class, maybe coming in high 30s in the open is a bit more interesting than high 20s in the 40-49, especially as in both the winners will be coming in a good minute ahead . I'm in the same position, I'll probably wait until November before entering and see if the training is making a stab at sub 7 plausible but it would be good to know if there were others to share the pain with.
Re: Other than the BIRC what UK based ergo comps are there?
Wow there are a lot of entries in the HWT classes, it seems LWT men don't enter indoor rowing events, or maybe the ration of LWT:HWT men is around 1:4. The open LWT class had a Olympic Silver medal winning Team GB rower in it, which would be amazing to be able to 'compete' with someone like that. Not that I would finish within 60 seconds of him but with careful wording I could impress a few people. 'Came 10th in the LWT British Indoor Rowing Championship, was tough up against Team GB rower(s), pleased with my result...' it would be true but missing out that the only qualification required was to be 75Kg or under, male with £32.50 to spend
My gut feeling at the moment is that I probably will enter one of the events I am qualified for, but as there is no early bird rate I will wait and see that my training etc is going the right way. It would be nice if a group of us were attending so we could put names to faces.
