Mitch perley from Crossfit. He carries his mass well for a lightweight

The facebook page has comments about some guy named Terry who allegedly hit a 1:17.x yet didn't register/film it or something. so we'll see.

Yeh I saw this, but didn't realise he was a lwt or that the wr was that much slower than the hw.
Looks like he has hollow bones I guess...

165lbs is the cut-off. I'm 6', right at the weight limit. If you're curious, go to erggonj.com, and look at my article "racing as a lightweight". Mitch has the LWT 30-39 record and is only a second off the over-all (set by a 19 year old). I was kind of surprised the LWT record was 12 second off the open record. The fastest
LWT I know of is Henrik Stephenson, and too my knowledge the only LWT to go sub 6min. Henry mentions a guy from time to time (his name escapes me) who is also world class. The fastest 500m guys are all monsters. They don't seem to pay a price for the extra weight until they hit 2k.

Very strong ofcourse, but I can,t help seeing the pacing, why those guys think dying in the last 100 s beyond me.

The fast, non crossfit, non powerlift heavyweights don,t die. They know what they are good for.

Pacing is relative to experience... ive done probably less than (7) 500m TTs ever. Broke the American Record on my 2nd ever attempt and with horrible pacing. Last thing you want when rowing a 500m piece is to feel like you could have given more.... which is why you have people fading so hard at the end in my opinion.

Ross, every sport in duration above 45 seconds is not won in the start, but in the last 25%. 400 meter track, 100 meter swim, 1k cycling track, speedskating etc. Everybody who thinks that going off at max for 70/80 seconds pieces has very little understanding of sports in general.
And its easy to just go off like mad, the skill is having the patience and the feel to go off just hard enough. You very seldom see some having left to much.
Although often WR S are set, when people reach the finish and still have full pace.

I understand what you are saying but you commented on people flying and dying... I am saying the explanation is inexperience.

There are so many factors other than pacing that contribute to distances that are 500m or less.
Mental toughness and upper body strength are extremely underrated as a true maximum effort is torturous.

Inexperience is a term, to me its more ignorence about sports in general.
Every true max effort on the erg needs indeed a very strong head, and to be very fast you sure need to be strong. But that has little to do with pacing. And ofcourse pacing will not make a great 500, but bad pacing will always kill a max effort. Its very macho to just go out and horribly die. But going off just fast enough to get a 100% result with the current potential one has would be a lot smarter.

Below a perfect example of a great paced 500. Not a lightweight, but a smaller 187, and not so heavy 92/3 ish kg. 1.13, for lightweighs an example. Problem is ofcourse that crossfitters, powerlifters are strong, but not very fit. Phaller was very fit, proberly not super strong, but 1.13 this 500.

Definitely a formidable time, but lets not kid ourselves - that's far from being the fastest M LW 500m time. Stephansen could row sub 1:22 500m in his sleep.
