That was an American Record at the time, but has been bettered several times over the 20+ years since. (WR at the time was held by Geoff Capes at 91' 5".)

Just keeping you on your toes my friend.

   I have to plead guilty to lack of memory and research on the first one, and in trusting the scottishmasters.org website on the 28# throw. Maybe I'm just seeing what you did at 40+?

As a 'slightly' slower erger (6:55.7) and, ahem, extraordinarily weaker thrower   , I can only dream of doing what you have done. :D

that would be a new american record on the concept II erg.
Not to quibble (and the rest of your post was excellent), but to recall a Blast From The Past, I believe that the American Record remains the 5:39 (5:39.0?) that Dave Simon did as 19-year-old Brown Univ student at the 2000 CRASH-B's.

Who would have thought back then that it would have lasted so long? A lot of people probably would have bet that Dave himself would do a much faster piece when he got a bit older.

I wonder what he's doing now? I know he had some back problems.
Correction:

Upon further review I must point out that chickenlegs was right and I was wrong. Dave Simon's (still American record) time was/is 5:41.0. I must have given Dave some of the seconds that I robbed from Jim.

Since no one else corrected me I'll correct myself. I hate to leave inaccuracies out there even if they are my own.

Thanks for the correction Rick, I have mistakenly counted Dave as being one of the people to go sub-5:40. I thought I heard that during the "A fine Balance" video, but I can't bear to watch it again, and may have lapsed into some sort of inattentive state during the original viewing. I can recall the other rowers not exactly appreciating the "shoe horning" of Mr. Simon into "The eight" which had done quite well without him to that point.
Erg on,

The 'A Fine Balance' video is painful to watch, but it is real life and real life isn't always pretty and doesn't always have a Hollywood happy ending. So I continue to watch during long UT2s.

It was actually remembering that Shurmei became the 3rd ever under 5:40 that got me thinking to research my faulty assertion. Shurmei's sub-5:40 came well after Simon's year.

Those guys above did a heat in the morning as well (the first time shown above). Cyrus Beasley was a Newburyport boy and bought his cross-country running and high jump shoes from me when he was in high school. In a school skit he once covered himself in green body paint and played the Jolly Green Giant. I was a believable performance. :D
