Ross, I'd say 1k is well within your reach- what are you targeting for your 2k in Boston 5:50?

5:50 would be sick. Not gonna happen this year. I recently took 13 weeks off from working out entirely. Trying to get back in shape all together again. Ill be very happy to break 6 min in Boston.

Re: 500 meter Wr attempt
For rowing you don,t need an average athlete, you need a very slow muscle fiber type, those are just like pure sprinters pretty rare. For the short stuff you are right, that is simply never really done, the longer work is relative much stronger. Its not the power but the aerobic side that brings a very strong 2k.PowerRower wrote:Its all relative to Specialization, Sean. The best athletes in the world play a handful of mainstream sports because thats where the money is. If the money was in rowing you would have different standards.
I am currently doing longer distance stuff. I had to let my back heal a bit. Gonna compete at the Crash B's in late February and then assess the situation after that. I am not far off the 1k WR... I think I will be making a run at that following my Boston Appearance. Hard to get motivated to start sprinting again.
Mainstream sports don,t work well for slow twitch people. Maybe some swimmers of cyclist could do well. Also don,t forget you need height to get enough lean body mass.

I'll be looking forward to watching you pull at CRASH B's Ross. I'm staying over Sunday night so I can hang out all day and watch all of the events, my race will be early am. Plus I'll get to eat while I'm spectating ( the whole LWT thing is a pain in the ass). See you there.

Re: 500 meter Wr attempt
I was lookin at the results from last year... sub 6, should I make it will be very competitive in my age group. My coach is actually faster than me right now, by then he will probably be well under 6 min... id love to be in a position to place in the top 3. Or maybe something crazy happens and I beat everyone in my age group

HI Steve - it was crazy brave though - he had never been trained and had no idea of what to expect and had no one to help him. Amazing brute strength and he is quite the athlete as you can see.cannondalerugby5 wrote:Thanks remisture

It was the culmination of a series of weekly 1 minute attempts by players and others on a Rugby League TV show (we call it the Footy Show) and no one really understood the difference between his minute (which wasn't really measured properly) and the 500 - some thought that he was a chance without really thinking it through. In the end the 1:16 was pretty good and an age AR I think (our AR is the WR of course) - it was just a pity that it was talked up way too much.

Re: 500 meter Wr attempt
You really had to feel sorry for the guy Lindsay
As you say so much pressure, probably not the correct prep
Hope he was well rewarded, might have been useful to the audience to select a well know really fit sportsperson,( non rower) I am sure you must have a few over there ! lol
This would have made his time look very respectable.
We had a guy Gareth Archer,ex England second row, pull a 40 age of around 5.48 if I recall ,after only 6 months training, would be interested in his time for the 500m .
Hell of an engine, sat at 1.45 18 for an hour
Of to gym to do my 5 x 5 Dead lifts- bummer

I am pretty sure there was very little in the way of rewards - he is a very highly paid (for us) professional and it would have been regarded as part of his promotional responsibilities I suspect.
Last year they had a similar thing with arm wrestling until one of the huge contestants (fortunately retired from football) snapped his humerus on national TV with a loud crack!
