Challenge to John Foy!!
eoinom,
38:05 after a week is really impressive! I never would have thought you would be any where near that fast. What were your splits for that time? If this is your second 10K, there is no reason you can't drop another 20 seconds in the next couple of weeks. You may beat John yet.
How big are you? Didn't you say you ran something like a 3:30 marathon?
Looks like I will end up sending you a T-Shirt, but I have to try another 10K first, but I don't see breaking 38 minutes this month. Good job. Focus on technique and you'll be faster yet.

Hey Nosmo , thanks it was very difficult , I can imagine it gets so much harder to knock a few seconds off your time as you get down to lower times .
How big am I?? Well i'm just under 6ft and about 72kg the last time i weighted myself.
3.30 marathon
no mate it was actually a 3:56 i'm not a runner at all hadn't ran a mile two months before marathon and had a bet with a mate i could do it in under 4hours - it was such an amazing and emotional experience the comaradary and everyone just willing each other on was fantastic, i'd recommend it to anyone , when i finished i found it hard to hold back the tears such a draining but amazing experience. It makes you want to try new things and push yourself harder.
I'd love to do the marathon next year with proper training and get into the spirit of it it was just fantastic.
My lower back is sore this morning i think my rowing form is definitly off or is it normal to have stiffness in the lower back the morning after a row??

An apology to John!!
Hey John just an apology in an earlier post a while back i said that your times weren't that impressive having tried a 10k for real a 37 min time is awesome and your 500m time is amazing i tried a 500 and was nowhere near yours.
I can imagine the rest of your times are equally impressive so sorry for that comment.

Hey nosmo i was looking carefully at the splits i was around 1:58/57 for around the first 15 mins then i felt good so pulled a bit harder and was around the 1:50 then for the rest , i think it said average was 1:54 could be wrong i was a bit dazed at the end i had to sit for a few minutes before i stepped up

A 38:05 is a 1:54.5 average. Averaging 1:57 for the first 15 minutes and around 1:51 for the rest that is poor pacing. If you do a steady 1:54.5 for 10K you will be surprised at how much easier it is then what you did. Your pacing was certainly better then the first time you did it but with even pacing you will have no problem going under 38:00 next time you try it.
So do the first 6000m at 1:54 then if you feel good drop it down a second or so until 8000m, then try to get steadily faster for the last 2000m if you can. Use the average pace of this for the following 10K.
When you first posted I never would have believed it but, you are well on your way to beating John. I now have no doubt you could best his current PR by the end of the month. However do realize that John is much faster at shorter distances.
If you back is sore there are two likely reasons. 1) your technique stinks so you are over using your back or using it in a inefficient way. With better technique you will have better power transfer from the legs resulting in faster times with less effort. Furthermore you are running a very large risk of hurting your back. Again get the C2 technique DVD. It is free. Videotape yourself, post it on you tube and get some advice from people on this forum. 2) You are doing long distances and going all out in a new sport without proper preparation so of course you are going to be sore--but still your legs should be the most sore.
I would be very surprised if it was not both of these.

I would have to say that you are a phenom. Do you realize that you basically matched John's 5K PB pace for 25 minutes? Almost 7K! Based on that alone I think that if you paced it evenly, on your last 10K, you might have been able to break his PB for the 10K on only your second row!

Thanks lads for the advice i was looking on the internet earlier and looked at a few rowing videos my technique is a bit off i'd say its hard to know i suppose without videoing it which i don't particularly want to do in a packed gym
I have been looking at John's times they are all really impressive his shorter distance seem incredible he must be a fit guy.
The monitor is a Pm3 i think i'm nearly sure looking at the pictures.
I'll try the equal pacing thing, my back legs and arms and especially back of shoulders are all well sore, it could be because im new to it.
I wouldn't go as far as to say im a phenom, although i haven't done rowing before i do mountain biking some running and swimming which may inadvertadly help me.

Dear eoinom,
Congrats on your times!!
There is something I don't get!
thats's your 28 min time on the 'd' set on 'c' with the pm3!
I tried it, setting the d tot c, but 28 min seems a little slow!!!
Cheers

Great work on your times eoinom. Superb progress.
I haven't trained for over 2 weeks now and am unlikely to be training over the next 7 days so I am out of this competition.
The way you are improving, you will more than likely beat my PB anyway.
By the way - screen shot of the monitor after your next 10k and a picture of you with it would be great to see.
Good luck.

Eoinom,
Those are outstanding times for just beginning, and a lightweight.
I'm interested to hear what got you to this level so quickly.
Are you a serious swimmer, cyclist, or train hard with the weights?
Please do post a video if you can, before all the rowing know-it-alls mess up your style.

You have it ALL wrong John, just like your continual claim that "no-one is ever sick before going to a Doctor" (thus all sickness is CAUSED by doctors), Everyone Rows perfectly prior to being coached. (Why would a "know it all" bother to mess with perfection?)John Rupp wrote:

Of course the Dentists in Tijuana are okay, so it's good that you drive there for that sort of treatment.

please make a comment on what john said, in the qoute.
John's comments about doctors and dentist are half truths or sometimes he could be correct. I believe the causes of most americans problems are caused by there bad diets. John might agree with that also.
If I got myself in accident, I am going to a doctor, but there are a lot of doctors who over prescribe medications, when a change in diet would be a much better approach or should be the first approach.
As far as Mexican Dentist's, just like in the US there are good and bad ones. Lots of mexican dentist's are trained in the US and are just as good as US Dentist's. If you can find a good one the cost can be as much as 1/3 to 1/4 of the total of what you would pay in the US. The number of people who cross the border every year for glasses, prescriptions and dental work is very high.

The curiosity should be more along the lines of why he would utter such a ridiculous thing in the first place. Has ANYONE commented about this fellows style or technique, anyone at all?
That's the nature of "half truths", isn't it?rowland wrote: John's comments about doctors and dentist are half truths or sometimes he could be correct.
Quite different than simply providing accurate information, but I'm sure it's status quo for Life Coaches, who trot out such cliche's as "Out of sight, out of mind." or "Absence makes the heart grow fonder.", whichever fits the situation to make them appear wise to the poor dolt that's listening to them.
