Bump because isn't this today?!!

Fred keep us posted on the results. Weather doesn't look too good for erg or scull.

But good luck and steady rowing to all participating!!

Actually 2 Boston Ergathons today...

Post by sledgehammer » April 16th, 2007, 6:56 pm

As you may have heard, it was wet in Boston today....

....but there were actually 2 (at least) Boston Erg Marathons to celebrate Patriots Day. I'm sure Fred will check in with a report of the Newton Wellesley Hospital Ergathon. Here are the details of the 4th annual Noble & Greenough School Scholarship Ergathon

We were at mile 12 on the course, and it started off very wet. The rain at 7:30 am was intense but luckily we had a tent thanks to a generous family who was supporting our fund raising efforts.

We ended up with 6 rowers taking on the full marathon, 4 half-marathons, and good number of students completing the 42,195 meters in relays. Total of 485,364 meters tallied by our crew.

Image

All in all, a ton of fun, and some money raised for a good cause.

Best, Ernie

Oh yes, there was a running race too. Here are the leaders at mile 12...with the pack about 4 minutes behind...I think Robert Cheruiyot, the eventual winner, is on the far right of the pack, right behind #3. Man, all of these guys can fly !

Ernie,

I was wondering how the weather would affect you. Congratulations to you stout souls.

Just got an update from Fred...I will let him fill in the details, but he organized an awesome event!

However, I lost a friendly wager regarding the two Ergathons. Fred & I bet $100, payable to the other guy's charity, based on total meters rowed by our respective teams.

The totals...

Newton Wellesley Hospital Breast Cancer Prevention Ergathon - 758,715 meters

Noble & Greenough School Scholarship Ergathon - 485,364 meters

Over 1.2mm meters in three hours!

We got our butts kicked, so I will be happily donating to $100 to Fred's worthy effort. I have work to do for next year.

As Ernie P has noted our Newton Wellesley Marathon event covered nearly 800k. Since we began the event with the weathermen forcasting a Biblical scale Nor'Easter we rowed inside. All of us except, of course, for Paul Flack and Robert Lee who both set up on the curb and watched the road race. Lucky for them the weather moderated arround noon, changing from wet and freezing to damp and freezing. As usual Paul set a blistering pace. Robert did well to keep up setting a over 60 record. (Frank Knight was very close behind.)

We had a real variety of participants. The hands-down favorite, however, was Debbie Benton, who has undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy in the last 12 months for breast cancer, yet rowed nearly the entire distance. She got a little help in the final turn but remounted the machine for the final 500K and triumph. No question Debbie was the hero of the event.

Debbie's husband, who ran the road race, jogged in from mid race to give his mate an encouraging kiss. A memorable moment in deed.

We were joined by the Belmont Hill Varsity Crew who rowed in relays of 3men each (6 teams) These young men were awesome:

Time Split
BHS 1 2:27:14 01:44.7
Disanto
Whitehead
Gordon

BHS 2 2:39:37.9 01:53.5
Hurd
Bourneuf
Morrisey

BHS 3 2:42:06.5
Gunong
Rosse
Mundt

BHS 4 2:34:52 01:50.1
Stone
Glenmullin
Lehrmann

BHS 5 2:49:55.6 02:00.8
Cancian
Kohler
Tracey

BHS 6 2:38:08.0 01:52.4
Favaloro
McGrath
Toomey

Coach Chris Richards banged out the whole distance himself, as did Andrew Kirk. Frank Knight wisely rowed at home in Maine avoiding wind and rain.

Full Marathons:

Marathon Time
1 Flack Paul 2:46:24.9
2 Richards Chris 2:48:20
3 Lee Robert 2:51:03.1
4 Knight Frank 2:51:20.8
5 Kirk Andrew 2:54:21.6
6 Benton Debbie 3:34:25.3

The relay action was fast and furious. Having decided not to row this year I found myself under Gregg Stone's spell. He and I teamed up. He sprinting ahead of our competition, me losing ground. Lucky for us he rowed a little more than I did. Community Rowing provided us with two male teams and a female relay. All were amazing. Belmont Hill coaching staff rounded out the relay division with power.

Relay Men:
CRI Men 1 2:46:45.5
Arm John
McGowan

CRI Men 2 2:52:02
Schaufler
Hyde

Stone and Millham 2:44:07.6
Stone Greg
Millham Fred

BHS Coaching 2:47:41.6
Rose 58:14.0
George 50:50.1
Louis 58:53.5

The CRI women rowed additional meters adding up nearly to a second marathon.

CRI Women 3:04:02 Extra
Lynn 32:26:00 2000
Alice 30:00:00
Pam 30:21:00 6000
Judith 31:00:00 7100
Christa 31:03:00 14000
Cheryl 29:12:00 12300
184:02:00 41400

Our fundraising efforts appear to be successful, some additional donations are expected this week. (Mr.P)

Special thanks to our staff, Dottie Bump, Dana Dowd, Sam Millham and Lucia Millham, who made sure everyone was well attended to.

We had a blast. I'm hoping next year to double the size of the field again and to line route 16 with ergometers.
