Great report Rick. Ditto on all that has been said by others. Even though I did not do as well as I would have wished - this is a great event. It was great to meet Tom Rawls, Mike Caviston and so many others. I'm planning on being there again in 2008.

Henrik Stephansen, the Open Lightweight winner, with his elbows out, in sharp contrast to the two guys beside him (Ebbesen & Rasmussen) who kept their elbows close to the body.

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. My race was wretched. The day was wonderful.

The good thing about being among the aging has-beens is that I got the race out of the way early in the day and could then meet so many of my heroes and heroines: Tom Rawls, with whom I’ve had a slow-motion conversation since last summer; the incomparable Bob Spenger; Mike Caviston, as gracious a superstar as I could hope to meet; Dennis, whom, to my regret, I never had a chance to finish behind; the peripatetic Rick Bayko, ace reporter and budding paparazzo, who will go sub-7 in the 60-64s next year; Jon Bone, who may or may not stop shipping as a Navigation Hazard, but who was totally gracious on a very disappointing day; David Hislop, Niall Williams, Harry Blackwood, and Roy Brook from across the sea; Carla Stein, who delivered the performance that so many of us had been expecting (you go, girl); Joan Van Blom, to whom no adjective does justice; and finally Carie Graves, who took a moment out of her warmup to explain to some dumbass

how to turn on the PM3. (I’d never used a D before.)

I can’t wait till next year.

Tim, Good to meet you, as well as many many others. It was a great day. First time I stayed for most of the action. But for me this year it was more about supporting and meeting new folk. It is one of the true glories of Crash b to get to meet so many people that you have read, responded to and formed a picture of from the forum. I was sucked into Carla's race from half way up the seats. You could almost palpably feel the effort as she came home even from there. I'm sure now more than just from the surname that I'm from the UK> I can't get enough of that group. Excellent folk all. Maybe next year I will see what I can do about offering you another opportunity. and lastly as long as I'm on here, HUGE well done to C2, Lisa, Brickett, Bill (and what is that on your face?), Suzanne, and Sean. dennis

Never posted pictures here before but I'll give it a try.

First off my cousin Deb a few seats down from Carla and Kinley. She's not listening to cox Mike (or common sense) and going out too fast. She wouldn't appreciate me posting a picture of the result - but she managed to "fly and die and fly" so a fine job never the less. She doesn't post here but seemed to know about a quarter of the people in the building through her years of tireless working with the the recreational rowing crowd around northeast -and a pretty accomplished competitive rower a few years back to boot.

Next up frequent forum poster and my boss's, boss's, boss's, boss - Roger Radke looking like he's having a moment of Zen. Without Roger's much appreciated prodding I never would have entered CRASH B. Roger set a personal best by 3 seconds despite positive splits. He hopped off his erg to rush to Logan Airport and fly off to yet another of his seemingly endless international business trips. How this guy logs as many meters as he does I'll never know. Says erging is all that keep him sane.

Last up - yours truely looking like Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean Part 12". Do-Wrap is my trademark so next year you all know how to find me.

I'm taking my last few pulls on the way to a 7:02 PB by 8 seconds- but that's easy to do when you are not that fast to begin with.

When I finished I said "That wasn't so hard" but by the looks of things it must have been. Think I could have gone sub 7:00 though. Yea, yea, Coulda, Shoulda!!!

Thought you might get a kick out of the most coveted prize the Sledgehammer Rowing Club gives out each year...The Penultimate in World Championships trophy (created by my brother Doug, after he came in 2nd to last in 30-39 hw one year. My other brother Will came in ultimate)

The idea is that we honor the team member who:

1. Works hard enough not to be last in their age group,

2. But, no harder!

With 39 entries at WIRC this year we had quite a battle for the honor....

We like the idea that most people don't know what penultimate means so if you announce:... "you know, I was Penultimate in the World Championships" then folks just might be impressed.

I guess there isn't much of a market for erg trophies yet. Best I could find was snowmobilers...I figure it is about the right position and the man/woman is sitting on a machine.

Coggs, looks like there was a real fight going on there to me! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet your cousin and if I'd known to watch out for the Pirate get up I could have met you, too. Next year sub 7 for you when we meet on The Road to Boston again!

BTW, you seem to be the kind of guy we like having at the Newburyport race in January. I hope that you can make it up some year. There are always several forumites present.

Coggs, are you the same Jim Coggeshall that used to run road races back around the 1970's and 1980's? Peter Wallan (the Hockomock Swamp Rat) and I were wondering that.

My knees would never hold up to road running. Perhaps you are thinking of my uncle Tim Coggeshall who used to run 10K's and an occasional marathon in NE back in the 80's. He's 25 years older than me but you would never know it!

I was a fairly competitive Catagory II cyclist back during that period. Raced against some kid named Lance my last year on the bike. I have not run since I briefly swtiched from fall crew to cross country way back in my Prep School days. Until I started rowing and erging last summer I'd spent the last 16 years seeing how high I could get my weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

Don't know about Ernie but I'll put your Jan. competition on my schedule for next year.
