Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
The 400/401 strokes has been discounted as it is 100% impossible to achieve for anyone who doesn't use Ergdata or Rowpro. It's also impossible on a PM2/PM2+ as you wouldn't know until after you've completed the row that you were over or under the limit.
The folks who picked that idea clearly didn't have any knowledge of how the PMs (2, 3, 4 & 5) do strange rounding. They also didn't ask first on here if their proposal was sane, sensible, coherent & achievable.

Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
The lady from Brum is entirely justified in entering her meter total for a 19.9 average spm effort. Some of our mathmatically precocious associates will no doubt attempt 418 total strokes for a “true” 20.9 average stroke rate but satisfy the rate restriction requirement by reference to their monitor readout. OBM explicitly invited this ‘rules are for fools’ approach in his initial description of the January challenge.

Sorry but have to disagree Doug - it is really easy and completely accurate to just count 400 strokes as 10 per 30" without any technical help at all.Citroen wrote: ↑January 6th, 2019, 7:19 pmThe 400/401 strokes has been discounted as it is 100% impossible to achieve for anyone who doesn't use Ergdata or Rowpro. Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
I understand and admire Mark and Lindsay’s confidence and pride in their mastery of unassisted rate control. When fresh as a daisy, 10 strokes per 30” isn’t really so difficult and almost anyone with a natural 3” drive plus recovery time can do 2 strokes per 6”. The difficulty of producing an absolutely accurate whole number rate average by stroke counting arises under the stress of a TT, which the ctc typically is. Maxing total meters encourages nearly all of us to use a full pressure stroke in a comp. Full pressure strokes produce muscular fatigue. Fatigue produces the over stress condition described by Joe Keating earlier. Typically, oxygen is rerouted from brain to body and maintaining a metronomic rate becomes largely the responsibilty of engrained muscle memory achieved by habitual practise rather than the responsibility of rapidly deteriorating counting skills. For many of us, the probability that we will overstroke or understroke the 39th or 40th iteration of 30”, the 19th or 20th iteration of 1’, or the ninth or tenth iteration of 2’ is large. Cerebral function gets short shrift in the room of the half dream.

Hello,
I would like to create a new CTC team, with the name of "Ergo Ergo Sum".
Many thanks!

Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
Have we heard anything from Fitness Matters as to what they're inflicting on us for February (which start in seven days)?

Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
John from Fitness Matters has told me the CTC for Feb will be a simple straightforward 2K.
We'll be remembering Carole McNally with a one day special 1402m on 14th as usual.

Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
The CTC for February is a straight 2801m (which you can row at R19).After the sad news today about Ann Yates, we'd like to change our 2K February CTC if it's not too late please.
In memory of Anne Yates...
2801m (28th Jan)
The option is open to row it at r19 (as in 2019) as a memorial distance. But rowers are also encouraged to go full whack if they wish - as Anne always appreciated a good race!
Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
On behalf of all at FM - and all those who knew Anne,
thanks for changing this for us at the last minute.
John.

Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
Would it be rude to suggest that the 28th Jan becomes a one day memorial row every year - similar to Carole McNally?
Or maybe Anne’s birthday?
John.

Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
The admin for Carole's memorial can be difficult for me anyway (as I have to do it at UK midnight on 13th Feb and again at UK midnight on 14th) not easy if I'm not in the UK. I don't want a second day when I have to do that. So my choice would be a Carole & Anne memorial on 14th Feb annually.
Re: Cross Team Challenge - Discussion Thread
MAD continued on their winning ways in January 'though BW Rowing put up a great performance to take the silver spot. Well done Sub7 for launching 22 boats on the virtual river.
FIRT have the challenge in March, Gee Crew in April and BW Rowing in May.
Fitness Matters have chosen to honour the life of Anne Yates with a challenge of 2801 metres for February.
