I'm planning on entering, but have no prior experience in a competition format. I was wondering if you know of any indoor clubs that might do weekly or monthly competitions? I'd hate to figure out all of the things I should have done better during the actual event.

I live in Fort Collins, but would be open to checking out something in Denver if that's the only option.

Thanks

Hi Daddy-O,

Glad you are thinking about coming to race with us. What race distance are you interested in trying? I get together weekly with some of my teammates to train, but we are down in Denver. Are you in any way affliated with CSU? Some of their crew team are planning to come compete at the Denver Indoor Rowing Championships, but most of them are away for the Winter break. I believe they return the second week in January. As the mother of a Senior at CSU, you would think I would know the date. You can email me privately if you prefer and hopefully, I can help you out. I can be reached at coach@milehighrowing.com or DenverIndoorRowing@gmail.com

I noticed elsewhere that erging legend Kurt Blumberg is training at 10,000+ feet and is looking forward to coming down to the low altitude of Denver for your race and all the extra oxygen that he will get there. Hope all goes well, that everyone has a good day, and I'll be looking online for results.

Second-echelon legend to Dennis Hastings. B) I merely fear Kurt. I'm in a different time zone from you.

The standard for 65+ lwts to qualify for a free flight to Boston courtesy of C2 looks to be soft this year, and I'm expecting the biggest and deepest quality 65-69 field at CRASH-Bs ever. This happens every time I advance to a new arge group. I'm guessing that's why Kurt is active again. I hope to be in the mix.

Will you make a return to show the 60-64s how to do it?

Bakes, Glad to know that you can still lay on the BS. The ONLY legend in our group is Jean-Paul. You'll do fine in the 65-69. And I have no plans on taking up rowing again, my days are taken up chasing watts on the bike and not rate and pace. I did have an interesting mishap on the erg last Friday. John, the gent I've been training with for years, and I throw down every Friday for 12 x 1 on/1 off. On the 7th one, about four strokes in, the faulty designed (model C)connection between handle and chain broke and i went ass over appetite backwards off the machine. Three rows of steppers and treadmills behind gave out a collective gasp, applauded when I got up and went in search of the errant handle, which I found two rows back and two machines to the right. Best part was the managemnt of the gym all over me with apologies and offers to avoid a lawsuit for my bruised butt. When John stopped laughing he thought i should ask for minimum $1 million, because of the sheer size of my butt. Best of luck to you at Boston, I still check to see how old friends are doing. take care, be safe. live well, live strong. d

Thanks for that. Haven't laughed out loud for a while.

The legendary Jean-Paul Tardieu, flanked by a couple of Yanks. Hard to believe that it was only 10 years ago. We look so young. And I still remember J-P lighting up a cigarette while talking to us and waiting for the Arena to open. :o

How's your eye? It sound like you're doing plenty of activity so I'm assuming it's better. Or are you now wearing a badass black patch? Last year when I moved one town over and about 8 1/2 miles from the store I decided to commute by bicycle on good days. Within two months I nearly killed myself twice crashing at 20 mph. In 2012 however, I got better and had a crash-free year. You remember how I had a close encounter with a cement post in England merely walking down a sidewalk. The erg may be boring, but it's safer for klutzes like me.

I saw Mike Caviston at CRASH-Bs last year, but little by little the old gang is moving on to other things.

Bakes, What a GREAT picture, Jean-Paul was one HUGE character. Quite an amazing man, a true champion in every sense of the word. Yes I do remember your close encounter with the cement post in Birmingham, and I still chuckle. The eyes are an on on going battle. Retina and cataracts are all fixed and healed but now it's glaucoma. Lost about 12% (mostly low and low peripheral) before we got it controlled. Now its check ups every few months, drops and not much time with the contacts in. The doctors tell me that I should not change up a thing activity wise, just learn how to "see" where I'm at in the peloton with some alternative strategies (ie, turn to look without turning the bike). Additionally on the advice of my cycling coach I took up ballet to force the brain to do a better job of balance and kinesthetic awareness with fewer visual stimuli. I'm a total bungler but its a huge challenge and I'm having a great time. On the bike I'm doing OK. Mostly I stick to Time Trials and Pursuit on the track (10th at Masters Nationals in the TT this year and two years ago we won the masters age group National title in Team Pursuit). I still keep up with David Hislop and on our birthday I try and call Mike but have lost track of most of all the others, 'cept to read on the forums. You got any news on Mary, Joan, Luann, Paul et all? take care, be safe. live well, live strong.

Dennis,

Sorry to hear about your continuing eye issues, but glad that you can keep up the activities. Sometimes I can keep up with Hislop and Joan VB on facebook, and I see Paul Flack every January when he comes up to my little erg race then again at CRASH-Bs. Paul is busy with his toy company and OTW rowing with Community Rowing on the Charles River. Mary and Joan come for the Head of the Charles but I haven't been down there for a couple of years since its so spread out that it's hard to find anyone. Luann still comes to CRASH-Bs and I usually see her and her husband briefly in passing in the arena. She's still a monster in her division.

Do you ever hear from that guy who was going to do a 6:16 as a 50+, 55+, 60+ lwt? Strangely enough, without him telling us how good he is there seems to be a dearth of information lending proof that it is so.

For the winner of the team challenge, will the prize be a C2 rower again this year?

Yes, the winning team for the Team Challenge will leave with a brand new Concept II erg. :-)
