Does PERathlon meet a need in the indoor rowing community?

Post by JimR » March 25th, 2006, 3:05 pm

If you choose Yes please describe the need you feel the PERathlon fills and how it fills it. Even better, provide examples of how the PERathlon guides your specific training.

The goal of the poll is to help explain to forum participants how to improve their personal erg performance using the PERathlon.

Thanks to one and all for what will hopefully be a useful topic!!

Of course it meets a need in the indoor rowing community, as John is the author of it and he is part of the indoor rowing community.

I can only guess at the need that it fills for John, but if it makes him happy, and it does seem to do that, I suppose that's enough. I think he gets some strange pleasure from claiming that faster performances than his are somehow slower by his mathnipulatons (new word), but those claims mean nothing in the real world.

For example everyone knows that a 2k in 7:00 is faster than a 2k in 8:00 (even John recognizes time as a valid measurement), just as sure as they know two pounds of feathers is heavier than a pound of gold.

It's all quite entertaining, except for the "evil yappie yorkie" bits, and it surely doesn't seem harmful in any way.

Perhaps John should organize a PERathlon event and see who wants to participate, the rules should be quite interesting as they would surely remain fluid until all results were in and the calculations could be adjusted appropriately.

Cheers.

BTW - I did not cast a vote, but if I do I will edit this bit out.

Paul, a very good point related to John that I didn't consider. I was not including John in the indoor rowing community when thinking this topic through ... my model was John "giving" something to the rest of us.

The results thus far would seem to indicate John needs to improve on the deliery of his idea into the group at large as many don't know what the PERathon actually is.

The results also indicate that once a person understands the PERathon they don't understand the value it offers in meeting their personal goals.

Beyond all this I think another lesson learned is how hard it is to develop good training plans, explain them and package them to be useful. To you and Mike I think the forum as a whole owes thanks for the time you put in trying to add to the base of knowledge! Without the efforts you have made we probably could have the good discussion threads which improve everyone a little bit!!
