January Challenge

Post by grams » December 16th, 2006, 10:31 pm

THe January Challenge teams are separate from the permanent teams. DIAR members who choose to join a JC team will have their meters credited to both the JC team and Ducks in a Row.

Last year there were several JC teams with DIAR members. Fowl Play managed by ehg (Emilia) was primarily for Ducks. I manged a tem called NATE (Not About the Erg) open to both sexes. The goal was to declare our New Years Resolutions and provide support to one another for sticking to them. Not so much emphasis on how many meters each person rowed. The Eh team began their epic journey around the world. Other teams were simply family members or a gym group.

So ladies, do you prefer several DIAR sub-teams for the JC, or one big one?

If you like the idea of smaller teams with distinct goals, please post some suggestions for team names/goals.

Hi Grams, thanks for addressing the JC. I'm not sure what I'd really want... just want to keep with DIAR and want to do more in Jan to keep myself going. I guess I'd be happy with one big team or if someone has ideas for smaller teams and goals for those, I'd be into that too. Hadn't really thought about it until I read your post. I wasn't active on the forum this past couple of years so don't know what's been good in the past. I just happened back to the forum this year with the HC and found all this cool stuff happening with DIAR...and joined! Glad I did! Glad to have found all these women and an active women's forum which hadn't been present a few years back. I just rowed and ignored the forum stuff. Look what I was missing out on!
And more people with ideas on this? Thanks again Grams...

DIAR has about 150 members. Nice, but for more individual participation a bit big.

I suggest that even if we have only one big team that we name it something other than DIAR for the January Challenge.

My funky name suggestions:

Row for it!

Down and Ergy (very corny)

Heh! I like Down and Ergy!

I don't know how we'd do the separation but I'd love to have a Ducks team this year. I didn't manage to do much for the challenge last year even though I was on the Fowl Play team (a vacation trip home ended with a death in the family which kind of threw me off).

Team separations could be based on experience levels (i.e. one for those of us rediscovering (or just starting) rowing and a different one for the more experienced rowers) or on geographical area?

I really want to stick with the 3 times per week weight loss training program I got from the UK site and try to re-establish my exercise habit. Perhaps sticking to a certain number of training days per week could be a goal for the team?

Just some ideas to throw out there...

I would like to participate in the January Challenge. I think one big team would be fine but a distinct name, other than Ducks in a Row, would probably be a good idea. There seemed to be several great suggestions last year and I am sure someone will come up with something brilliant in short order.

Hey Grams, nothin' wrong with either name! Pretty clever there! I'm up for anything really, big, small....whatever, just great to see people already interested when we are still knockin' ourselves out on the HC! GO DUCKS! B)

I'd love for any Ducks and others who wanted, to join together for the JC.
Ducks in Res/volution? Ducks for Revolution? Resolute Ducks...or something like that, as January is the month we typically make resolutions...

Anyway, happy to be a part of whatever team we form!

Hello All!! I really have no preference for the January Challenge as it will be the first challenge for me. I am just excited about doing a challenge. My Model D arrived 5 days ago and at this point my rowing isn't too impressive. Mischa mentioned teams based on experience or levels which would be neat if there were other newbies out there willing to team up.

I'm really not sure how all this works but am just eager to start and have goals to work for. So no matter what is decided I will have fun rowing.

All I really care about is sticking with DIAR and making sure our meters log onto that total... if we have a sub group and meters can go there ALSO that's cool. DIAR in RESOLUTION
Wonder why it stops on Jan 30, as Jan has 31 days? I would think of something like that  sure doesn't matter.
I've been watching Mt Hood with my telescope today and praying for the climbers and their families... sure is nice and clear today...hope they find them all alive.

More on last year's challenge:

Last year there were ranking categories based on the number of members on a team. As I recall the smallest category was for groups of 15 or under members. There were 8 members in NATE and we didn't win our category, but we kept on erging. There weren't any age or weight categories as far as C2 was concerned.

I am still listed as the captain for the NATE team in my profile, and the last challenge that shows on my 'captains' list is the Fall 2006 one, so I assume that was a virtual team challenge too. I wasn't erging then-I was recovering from my knee surgery- so I expect that other NATE members may have joined another fall team. I don't plan to resurrect NATE this year.

Grams volunteers as captain of a smaller team:

I'm having ongoing problems with my lower back and I'm not sure when I will be 'all well' again. I can erg just fine, however sitting at the computer (sitting anywhere really) is making me worse, not better.

I'm willing to be captain of a smaller team, but not the main DIAR January Challenge team.

I will set "Down and Ergy" up as a JC team with myself as captain and delete NATE from my profile. After Christmas I'll start a DAE thread for members (mostly). By that time C2 will have posted a good set of instructions for joining a team. It was a little confusing last year.

My goal will be to continue my 3 times a week 30 minute erg session, gently. And lose 7 pounds in January. I really need to get back into those 505 jeans again... If you want to gently erg with me and restrict yourself to salads ( or work on your own goals) join me in DAE and we will see what we can accomplish together in a month.

Volunteer(s) will be needed for captaining other DIAR teams (or one big DIAR team)

Fowl Play(?) it was coed last year
Resolute Ducks(?)
Other teams-names? just for ladies?? decisions, decisions!

If you captain a team you get to name it!!

I like Resolute Ducks. To paraphrase Dory, the little blue fish in Finding Nemo, keep on erging, keep on erging. :)
