Avoiding the 1 million meter burnout

Post by stargazertechie » November 17th, 2006, 8:58 am

I'm an 18 year old collegiate novice rower. My team does the million meter challenge every year for the first 10 weeks of winter training. It's the end of the first week, and I'm 30k behind where I need to be to get to the million meters. I'm also attempting to shave a second off of my PR each week, getting to a sub 2:00 average 500m split (on a 20' piece) by the end of Feb.

How can I keep myself from burning out. I just looked at my emails, and I've only been on the erg/on the water for 47 days.

Does completing this Million meter challenge in 10 weeks get you anything other than the potential (likely) of burnout?

Are you sure it's not a Team Prank or Hazing?

100k/week is a high number, especially if you are concerned with quality over quantity. And if you are tying to push 20' PB out of yourself each week, it appears you are concerned with quality.

Nope, it's not a team prank or hazing. It's in our winter workout handbook.

Okay, so you are set on doing this, and presumably catching up on the 30k deficit. What did you do for the 70k you did log during the first week?

What is your athletic background?
Under/Over 6ft?
Under/Over 160lbs?
Male/Female?
What type of time do you have to dedicate to this?

I played softball for 10 years, but stopped my sophomore year of high school and led a fairly unactive lifestyle. I'm under 6ft, and over 160 (female). I've got 3-4 hours of time to erg/lift weights.

I pulled several shorter pieces this week (3x20', 5k, 3x19 pyramids)

You'll need more time than 3-4 hours weekly to row 100,000 weekly. That would take me 8 hours but I'm not in racing condition; perhaps you could row it in 6 hours a week if you're thoroughly conditioned already.

To break it up so it's not so monotonous, alternate moderate intensity days with days when you push your pace to a new PB for some portion or all of it. But step it up gradually or be sure and alternate with easier days or you're setting yourself up for injury.

So what did you do this past week?

I took it as you had 3-4 hrs/day to dedicate to this effort, which is certainly enough, but if it is per week, that is going to be impossible, as that would require a 1:12 avg pace, which would be considered a bit though by most everyone.

7 hours of Erging at 2:06 would get you 100k, so perhaps figuring it out around that pace would be good. i.e. 30 minutes at 2:06, 10 minutes at 2:00 alternated with 10 minutes at 2:12.

8 hours @ 2:24 would get the 100k.

No matter how you slice it, it is a bunch of work per week for the Erg.

Last week

Post by stargazertechie » November 26th, 2006, 11:47 pm

Last week I put away just shy of 100k (I was away from the gym for thanksgiving)

Yes, I have 3-4 hours a day to train, and I put away between 17-25k during our morning workout with the team (depending on what our perscribed workout is)

Our programme is set up with moderate days, light days, and rest days, so I'm not worried about injury.

Thanks for the motivation everybody!

:D Thank you for the inspiration. The Holiday Challenge seemed boring the 3rd time, and you inspired me to try 1M in 10 weeks. Don't know if I'll make it, getting up early has not been my forte but is the only way I can fit it in, so every day is an accomplishment.
