Hi CathyG! Glad you found us. You can log the meters you do at the Y. Just note down the total meters and the time it took to do them. Then when you're back home w/ your computer, log on and log those meters!
You may want to read the bottom of the page that you log on. It will explain the particular times/distances that can be "ranked". If you log a distance or time that can be ranked, you'll be offered a little button to "rank" it. You'll then be able to compare yourself to others who have ranked the same time/distance. (You can only have one ranked workout for each of the "rankable" times & distances. If you enter a 2nd one, it will wipe out the first...even if the first one was faster!)

Register "
here." Note that you have to register separately for the forum (which you've definitely already done) and for an on-line log. If you haven't done that, go ahead and do that. Once you've done that, you'll need the number of meters and the time...the rest is basically self-explanatory. When you've filled in all of the blanks from your work-out, click the "add" button. That's it.

You have these questions in exactly the right order!

If you try to do this when you first create the log book, apparently it doesn't "take"--and you have to go back and edit anyway. So here are instructions I posted for someone else:
1. Go to your on-line log, then to your profile (click the box at the top--next to the "logout" button).
2. That takes you to your "Profile Settings"--right below that, click on "edit profile" which takes you to a page labeled "Edit Profile for Online Ranking/Logbook."
3. On that page, scroll nearly to the bottom...you're looking for "University/Club Standings Affiliation". When you find that, there's a drop down menu. Find the team you want to be on, then choose that so that it appears in the window.
4. Finally, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on the button that says "Update Profile."
If you haven't decided on the Ducks (and they are a good choice, BTW--I'd seriously consider them if I weren't already on another team, the Iron Oarsman), then look around the various virtual teams and see if there is one that particularly appeals to you. Some are based on affilations--geographic, schools, jobs, goals, age or status (like age, gender or status). Some of them have activities like using their meters to "row around the world"--the Eh team) or meat IRL at indoor rowing competitions. Some of them have a team thread or a separate web site for mutual support (either here or on the UK forum). Some use their team's standings page to communicate. Some focus on average meters/member; others on total meters. Some are by invitation only (Ducks is not one of those, as far as I know). If you have questions about a team you're considering, just PM one of the members who seems to be active.

.
His weight is not an impediment...see the thread Row-Pain-Row-Gain which is composed of people whose focus is losing weight. However if he wants to, he can row safely without injuring his back...he could even rehab it and make it stronger! However he would need to be extremely careful to use very, very good form in order to protect his back. People who are not using good form injure their backs rowing.
Good luck! and welcome!
