I am a fit 54 year old woman competing against a fit 27 year old woman in a 3000m rowing challenge. What should my 500m split time be versus hers? Is there a handicap system?

Perhaps compare the 50th percentile times between your age group and hers in LogBook rankings. The % difference in watts should give you a decent ballpark.

What Ernits has suggested is probably as good as it will get for some sort of handicap, but it is going to be difficult to apply a proper handicap due to a number of reasons, eg weight, height, previous rowing, and arguably cycling, experience. I say mention cycling as running, and most other sports, don't have much crossover benefits but cycling is probably the most closely matched.

There could even be hormonal issues to consider too, as it has been proven to affect performance in female athletes, at least to some extent.

Good luck with it, as it does sound like a very interesting challenge.

Googled a bit. Found this https://analytics.rowsandall.com/2018/0 ... ng-system/

This is about a 1k time. So to get the 500m adjustment devide by 2. For 3k its x 3

From above 27 a handicap starts.
