Holiday Challenge 2018!
Holiday Challenge 2018!
Hey folks,
The Skeleton Crew challenge got me back to a regular rowing routing and now it's time to look forward to the Holiday Challenge.
I managed the 200K last year, now can I do it 2 years in a row? (pun intended )
I actually think accomplishing it this year will be harder. I'm still at about a 3:15/500 time although I am a few pounds lighter.
Here's wishing for the best, and looking forward to hearing from others!

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
Hello there Sharky, it’s good to hear from you - once again I am guilty of not checking out this forum as much as I had intended.
I do hope that you had enough opportunities to try out your paddle board during the summer months. I shouldn’t worry about your lack of erging, as your OTW activities must have provided you with plenty of exercise.
Like you I have had a busy summer and not quite so much erging - have been away a fair bit, had people staying and have generally been out and about.
Sharky, I’ll be very happy to keep you company once more during the Holiday Challenge. This is an extract from one of my Holiday Challenge posts last year.
“ I am aiming to do 10km each session and I’ll probably row for 3 consecutive days each time before taking a rest day. My plan isn’t set in stone though as life away from rowing can sometimes have a habit of throwing up distractions when you least expect them. “
Hoping to follow the same plan although I have been dithering … Should I be Missy Masochist again and go for 200km or take the slightly easier option of 100km. It’s important that I accomplish the latter and then anything over that will be a bonus. Let’s see how it goes … or more to the point, how my available time and energy levels go. Also, as of yet, my brain hasn’t informed the rest of my body of its latest exciting plan. Should be interesting.
As for yourself my dear, you did brilliantly last year and therefore know, that as tough as it was, especially with work commitments, you have the capability to achieve the same this year. If you are unsure, then aim for the 100km.
Don't worry about your pace, if you are still losing weight then you must be doing something right. It usually takes me about 62/63 minutes to comfortably row 10,000m. Most of my rowing is at a comfortable pace and since I lost weight and haven't put any back on, then i must be doing something right as well.
Like last year, the most important thing is that you do not suffer from burnout or incur any sort of injury.
See you at the starting line.
Jill

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
I hope to join you ladies in the holiday challenge. As I just started rowing in October, this will be my first holiday challenge. We drive down to florida for the winter the first couple days of December, so hopefully my concept 2 will be in the back of the truck so I can continue my new fitness hobby . I will start out with the 100,000 goal and see how it goes. I also do many other fitness things (paddle board, pickle ball, triathlon training), so I need to balance things out and not overdo it. I just got back from 2 weeks in florida without an erg, so today will be my first time back in a bit. I look forward to following each other's journey through the challenge.

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
Howdy Jill and Janet,
Got my first row in this morning. Hoping to get 2-3 more sessions done today and reward myself with some roast beef and a baked potato.
I mentioned to a friend that participating in the CRASH-Bs was in my bucket list (target 2020). She suggested that I should probably participate in a 'local' competition so I'd know what to expect etc. I decided that was a good idea so part of my motivation for the Holiday Challenge this year will be to get ready for the NW Ergomania (http://mbrsc.com/nw-ergomania/ I don't expect to be competitive but I think it will be fun to go.
Good Luck to all! And to those in the US, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
Got my first 5000 meters in for the holiday challenge after getting home from family thanksgiving across the state. Good for you Dykebert on setting a goal for the indoor competition. Which distance will you race? That would be fun to do once I get some more experience under my belt if they had something closer to either my Michigan or Florida locations.

How's everyone doing?
So far I've been able to keep ahead of my scheduled meters, but I am looking forward to my rest / light days on Tues and Weds!

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
I just got in my second row today to put me over the 25,000 mark. Also got a new PR for 500m (2:03.9) in the process . Trying not to have any rest days this week as we are driving to florida Saturday and Sunday so I will lose 2 days then. Lost a lot of endurance with 2 weeks away from rower while on vacation this month, so I'm hoping to gradually add longer rows. Tomorrow is a big swim workout for a triathlon friend's 50th birthday, so not sure how many meters I will row tomorrow. Shouldn't have any problem hitting 100,000, but hoping to possibly do 200,000 for the challenge.

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
Thanks, Sharky. Have to hit the rower for a long one tomorrow. I did a 2500 yd swim this morning and a second attempt at the Nov CTC to improve my time and was toast after that, so less than 1500 meters towards holiday challenge today. That Nov CTC is way harder than it sounds for somebody new to rowing. Stamina and technique are not where they should be to improve any more on that one, but I am way too competitive to not try to move up a boat when I only need 1 or 2 second improvement .

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
"PR for 500m (2:03.9)" - kudos! 2:00 is my goal. Some days I hit it (barely) and some days it's a struggle. I'm hoping to get to the point where it's more likely that I'll hit it then a surprise if I do.
I'm looking forward to the HC2018 which dovetails with my target of 2M by the end of this year. I'm at 77,000 for the HC2018 and at 1.5M for the year (starting in May). The challenge helps break down those longer goals into more manageable pieces.

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
Great progress on the challenge and your total for the year. I got a late start (began rowing Oct 2018), so I have a ways to go before hitting that first million meters. I have only gotten below 2:00 on very short rows (like the CTC intervals of 111 meters this month). My typical rate for 2000, 5000 etc. is 2:20 to 2:30. I look forward to gaining stamina on the erg and better technique so I can some day be consistently around that 2 min mark for mid length rows. Your numbers have motivated me to get back on that erg for a longer row tomorrow (only made it 4000 meters today).

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
Great job everyone!
My total for the first week is 60K. The rest of the weeks are scheduled for 40K so if things go according to plan I should be good. And if life happens I should still have a shot at the 200K.
Actually, I decided I'm going to shoot for 201800.

201800 is a great idea, Sharky! I am only at 30,000, so off the computer and onto the erg I go .

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
Took a day off after a shot in each arm for some upcoming travel to Thailand, but rowed 7500 today to get me almost to 50,000 thus far. We will be driving for 2 days to florida, so I will pick up the pace when we get there to get back on track. Hope everyone else is keeping up with their schedule and enjoying the workouts.

Re: Holiday Challenge 2018!
OUCH for the shots! I have friends that went to Thailand last winter and they really liked it.
I had 3K scheduled for this morning, but got into an easy rhythm and did 5K which put me over the 100K mark!
Onward to 200K!
