Becoming a lightweight???

Post by scullergirl14 » November 12th, 2016, 5:08 pm

Hi guys!

I am currently 14 yrs old, 5'6 feet, and am sitting around 140 pounds.

Because of my stature and rowing style, I have been told by numerous coaches that I should try to lose to become a lightweight so that I can compete in that category. Lots tell me I will only make it into university as a lightweight.

My 2k is currently a 7:41 but I am in grade 9 and have time to work on that.

But if I try to go lightweight will my 2k get worse??? Is it even possible for me to lose the 10-15 pounds??? And how do I lose weight???

I also want to know if it is realistic that I could be accepted into a university as a heavyweight.

It is only my second year rowing, but I am very serious about it and am planning early. I know becoming lightweight is a struggle for many female rowers and would really, really appreciate as many opinions as I can get. Some coaches and athletes are pushing me to be lightweight, others say I'm too young.

THANK YOU AND PLEASE REPLY ANYTHING OR ANYONE CAN HELP

At age 14, it is much too early to make that decision. You may still gain some height. Hold off another 2 or 3 years, eat properly, get plenty of exercise, and then concern yourself about which weight category you should be in.
