I've had a few blips this week (eaten some questionable food and missed a few days on the erg) so I've been feeling really disappointed in myself. I'm trying not to be too hard on myself, but it's difficult

The good news is I've noticed an improvement in my fitness. When I got on the erg for my very first session I felt knackered after 10 minutes and had to stop, I can now manage 50 minutes without breaks and I'm only 13 sessions in. I know eating a healthy diet is the best thing I can do for weight loss, so I'm really going to try and focus on this.

I Hope everyone else's January challenges are going well!

not really - i may have been a little over zealous with mine.
30 hrs is a long time - especially as I dont train exclusively on the rower.
at the moment i'm about 2 hrs behind schedule...

Hi Dean, sorry to read that you are flagging a weeny bit at the moment - it was commendable of you to tackle the Long Haul in the first place. Much kudos for that and for keeping up such a great pace too. B)

This is tricky because giving an experienced erger the benefit of my ’ rowing expertise, ‘ is a bit like telling ‘ Granny how to suck eggs ‘ and, you have probably thought of this anyway, but here goes:

In order to make up the missing 120 minutes, why not cut back on your meterage slightly and therefore reduce your energy expenditure each session. That way, you might feel inclined to row some extra minutes.

Or, have you thought about spending less time ( temporarily ) on your other training activities and using the energy saved, for rowing?

“ Less training! “ he said in his best Lady Bracknell “ A handbag! “ voice.

By the way Dean, this is not some fiendish plot on my part to sabotage the fact that you are only 45,202 metres ahead of me at the moment …

Seriously, these are only suggestions, but if you do decide to divide the missing 120 minutes up into several segments, and then tack them onto your remaining sessions, that might help.

Lori ( RowerGal ) I dipped into the Pete Plan thread and saw that you have been rowing up a storm with your times and training schedule. Very impressive - I’m sure that you must be on track with the Haul.

Sharky, thank you so much for joining the Free Spirits’ Team, we do appreciate having the benefit of your metres. :)

I agree with ornatewobbegong, don’t be disappointed at having to switch from The Haul to The Stretch. It was realistic of you to realise that sometimes, what sounds doable in theory, isn’t always quite so easy to put into practice, especially when work has to take priority.

The sensible use of your daily energy levels has already resulted in improved pace and continued weight loss, so please keep doing what you can, when you can. We need your metres. :)

Ornatewobbegong, or if I may, Obg, don’t take yourself to task when you’ve had the odd blip or two … who hasn’t. Unless you are Penelope Perfect, then accept that some days are not always going to go according to plan …

Obg, when I joined Free Spirits four years ago, I was unfit and overweight.

I cannot remember exactly now, but I think it took me about 20 months to lose 70 pounds. This was achieved by very sedate rowing, ( I always think of myself as Mistress Slowcoach ) and eating just a little bit less of what, for the most part, was a healthy diet. Nothing complicated. Nothing faddy. Nothing that was a quick fix.

Two years on and I have still kept the weight off. I love rowing, not just for the physical benefits but also for the feel-good factor that it provides. My training regime is sporadic, my PBs have the initials, BC after them and at times my pace would be enough to make many ergers weep  . But I’m happy.

I have many incentives that keep me motivated so that I do not put the weight back on.. One is that I never want to hear a doctor tut, tut at me about my weight, ever again.

Good luck with the weight loss Obg and I hope that you will be successful in attaining your goals. :)

I decided to stick with the January Challenge - thought it would be more flexible and still haven’t set myself any goals.

Finished my row this morning listening to Metallica's Fade to Black. For those who know the song, here are some slightly different lyrics.

Haven't lost the will to row
iPod on and away I go

Hi Everyone,
Came in to see how everyone was progressing with the challenge for this month. So far, so good for me. As of today, I conquered "THE HAUL" and am just over 15 1/2 hours. Still progressing on my training plan with a few PBs recently so all is going well with my training too.

@bisqeet - Keep at it. Even if it is just the carrot for now, something to help lead you along the way usually helps.
@ornatewobbegong - You have made great progress in your fitness in a very short time. I was pleased to see you are already rowing up to 50 minutes. Very nice. Stay on course, watch the food (it is hard to do!), and let us know when you start seeing changes in your waist ... it will happen.
@dykebert - Congratulations on the noticeable decrease in your waistline. YAY! Always nice to see our hard work paying off. Keep it going!

How is everyone else doing? Check in. Let us know.

Jill - Thanks for the rowing kudos. It is very much appreciated. MUCHO congratulations on your weight loss. Holy cow! That is really great news. Keep up the great work!

BTW, If anyone reading this is following the Beginner Pete Plan or Pete Plan please come join us in that forum. More females in that forum would be great! :D

Good rowing, All!

Hey folks,
Looks like I'm going to make 'The Stretch' (just need one more day).

Thanks everyone for posting and keeping this thread alive. Loving all the great posts.

Jill, I'm down about 75lbs in 18 months. Still have a way to go, but feeling good about it.

Not sure what I'm going to do in Feb and March, when there's no football to watch. I'll have to come up with a plan B.

Just a few more days!

Sharky
Just keep rowing, keep on rowing

Sharky, it’s not “ Looks like I’m going to make The Stretch. “ … it’s “ I have! “ Well done. B)

Mega congratulations on your weight loss - that’s a wonderful example of effort and commitment and definitely deserves another of Lori’s “ Holy Cow! “ I hope that your ‘ feel good ‘ feelings and sense of self-esteem will keep you motivated and on track.

Thank you again for your valuable contributions to the January Challenge :D - did you think that the Meterboard encouraged you to keep up your rowing consistency?

Lori, MUCHO congratulations to you as well for your successful attempt at tackling The Haul B) - I knew I should have put some money on that one.  Keep up with your training; more rewards to come I’m sure.

I hope that Dean was able to make up the missing two hours and that he and ornatewobbegong achieved results that they were both happy with …

This time last week, I actually thought that I might make be able to break into ( only by a whisker though ) the 300,000m but the opportunities slipped away. Okay, I’ll ‘ fess up ‘, it would have been possible … if I hadn’t spent the time watching a series on BBC iPlayer about the Ancient Egyptians. I’m putting all the blame on the Pharaohs.

Couch potatoes? :o We most certainly are not.

Everyone, do your best to carry on being ambassadors for those of us " Who can take some sort of exercise ... And we do. "

Jill :)

I'm sad to say I failed my January challenge due to a week's worth of illness and an injury (I hurt my elbow).

I'm trying not to be too hard on myself but I'm very disappointed.

The good news is I've been really trying with my diet and I've lost 9lbs since the start of the year. At least that's some good news.

Congratulations to all that completed their January challenge!

Hello there ornatewobbegong, how are things with you?

Well done on the weight loss - I hope that you are continuing to lose the pounds and are now back to regular rowing again. :)

Your Avatar certainly looks pretty determined - definitely, " Don't mess with me. " :)

Hi Jill :)

I haven't been doing very well at all. I've been quite depressed of late and I've been finding motivation very difficult.
Work and personal stuff have really been getting me down.

Yesterday I tried to give myself a bit of a pep talk and managed to get back on the erg. I'm too scared to step on the scales because I think it'll just make me feel even worse about things.

I guess my current approach is to just take things one day at a time. I think joining in on the forum will be motivational for me, so here I am...

My avatar is Jyn Erso from Rogue One, she was pretty feisty!

Thanks for thinking of me. How are things with you?

Hello there ornatewobbegong.

Many, many apologies for not replying sooner to your last post. I kept checking in on this thread up until about the end of March. As I rarely look at the C2 forum, this is the first time that I have read your answering post. I am sorry my dear and please do not think that I have been ignoring you.

How have you been? You sounded so ‘ down in the dumps ‘ - depression and stress can be such difficult conditions to have to cope with.

Hoping to hear from you - I’ll keep checking the forum.

Best wishes to you Obg.

Jill :D
