A-crew-ing we will row.

Post by acrewer » December 28th, 2007, 5:54 pm

Thought I'd reintroduce myself as well, since my email is finally correct! I'm a CPA so I make accruals to the books, which makes me an accruer. But since I also row, I'm acrewer as well. Hence my nickname.

My resolution this year is to keep up the 5k/day even through tax season. I rowed for SCU in the late 1970's, and the discipline litterally got me through school and the CPA exam. Self-imposed discipline is a challenge, but with the support here and the various challenges online, it doesn't seem so lonely. I did succeed in making the 100k for the HC, and have joined the Luna-Tics for the JVC.

PS - the picture is that of my Mom and I on the cover of the California CPA Society Magazine. My mother was one of the first women CPA's in California and I was one of the first 3 women to row competively for 4 years at SCU.

Hi thought I'd introduce myself as well. I am a 37 (soon to be 38) mother of 2 (7 and 3) and work full time as a senior administrator at an academic medical center. Needless to say I have very little free time - but that golden hour between 5:30 and 6:30 is mine. I bought my Model D in Feb of 06 used it a bit and then life interveened. After vacation this summer and my weight going up and up I got serious. I have been rowing 3 - 4 times a week since and have lost 20 lbs. I have decided to focus on a million meters this year and losing another 20 lbs. Rowing is the one exercise that I really enjoy - could be the tivo that I watch - but doesn't really matter. The best bonus has been how strong I have become and how much easier it is to keep up with the kids and my very active fit husband. The january challenge has spurred me on to try to do 60 minutes 3 times a week up from my usual 40 minutes.

Dawn.

New Oldie on the Block

Post by carolrh » January 19th, 2008, 9:18 am

Hello, I have just bought a second hand Model D PM3. Since I stopped smoking last August I have watched in horror as a band of fat weighing around 15lbs slowly attached itself to my now non-existent waistline. I am 61, have remained a steady 140lbs (5'4") all my adult life, never had to diet or even think about my weight.

That said, apart from walking the dog five mornings a week, I engage in pretty sedentary occupations and need to exercise more. Once, a long, long time ago I joined a gym briefly and remember the rowing machine with affection.

As yet I haven't got to grips with the display thingie so I guess I'd better do that and then I would like to join something competitive as I quite like competition and I do need motivation - I start with the best of intentions and then.......

Very inspiring to read these posts. Good luck to all of you who are just beginning or are returning to rowing. I began on the water rowing in 1970, at age 18...At 55, I still find rowing is essential to my health and happiness. Love how the C2 has provided access to this great activity to so many.

Welcome! Good job quitting smoking!

For all the newcomers, C2 has lots of motivating challenges. We are currently in the middle of the January Virtual Team Challenge. If you would like to join, send me a PM with your first and last name and e-mail as you entered them when you create your online logbook. Forgot to say - the team name is DAFT - Ducks and Friends Together. Then you can see if you can climb through the ranks.

There is also an ongoing virtual team called Ducks in a Row. You can join both Ducks and DAFT. Ducks is an ongoing team. DAFT is only for the January challenge.

Join the fun. :D

Hello, I have had my D PM3 for two weeks now. Having never rowed before, this is ALL new to me. I don't get anything you all are talking about! I am determined to keep rowing, but would like to understand the terminology also. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks

Hi Urowgirl. I'm pretty new too. You will learn alot by scanning the forums. Ask any questions you have and people will be happy to answer them for you. Set up an online logbook at the C2 website and then join the Ducks And Friends Too for the January virtual team challenge. See the message right before yours! Rowing became a lot more fun for me when I got on the Ducks in a Row team and joined in the challenges. It's nice to have a goal. Take it easy and build up slowly. Watch the Oarsome Foursome DVD that came ?? with your model D. I think technique is pretty important. Good luck and welcome!!

All the stuff is new to me. Have been rowing for two weeks on "just row." Can't really wrap my head around all the options on the PM3. I am happy just to take the time for myself as it is! I rotate between the eliptical and the rower. However, the rower has given me a huge blister on my heel. The Oarsmen DVD rowed without shoes, so I did too! OOPS my feet hurt!

Yes, I have looked at the technique on the DVD. However, no matter how many times I have looked at it, and think I know it, it isn't so easy on the erg. Without anyone to critique, I can only assume I am doing OK.

I love my new toy, and I like the idea of being fit. Actually doing it...

I don't know how they row barefoot! I wear running shoes, biking shorts and biking gloves. I had to just fool around with the PM3 to figure it out. You can select standard workouts and do a measured distance or put in your own time/distance, etc. In the beginning I just rowed for 15, 20, 25 minutes and worked my way up to 30 which was about 5,000meters. So, then I used the 5,000m workout and worked on bettering my time on that. I continue to go back and watch the DVD for technique. Hang in there. Today I did my first 10,000 meter row nonstop. Not a great time, but OK. You might want to checkout the stretches on the C2 website. I try to do them before and after rowing.

great job!

Conrats on the 10,000! And no stops! That is great. I row for a TV episode (currently season 3 of ALIAS.) The time is about 40 - 43 minutes, but of that time I only row about 30-35 minutes. The rest of the time I have to stop and BREATHE! Though, I think half my problem is my heel hurts so bad from the blister. Today I rigged something up that didn't rub my heel; it was alot easier to row for a longer period w/o stopping. Tomarrow is the eliptical so my foot gets a rest.

Why does is say "Paddler" under everyones name?

Keep up the good work.

Great start!

Urowgirl, you are doing great if you are already rowing 30-35 mins! I don't know why it says Paddler under most peoples names?? Maybe someone who has been around a while can answer that question. Do remember to breath!!

The title under everyone's name is related to the number of posts they have made on the forum. I don't know what all the titles are, nor the number of posts needed to make each title.

Hi there. I am just starting out rowing and excited by the idea that there is a whole community out there. Having checked out this website and especially the women's forum, I am now the proud owner of a one-day-old model D (and PM4) that I picked up after the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships in Toronto yesterday. I didn't get there in time to see the races, which was too bad, but I was amazed by the number of people there and also encouraged to see that they weren't all super lean.

I am hoping to row to get fit and lose weight so I feel better and look better and can enjoy all the activities I want to. I work at home as an editor and so spend a lot of time sitting at my desk. My three daughters are all away at university but my nine-year-old nephew lives with me during the week. I curl two nights a week in the winter, but work and life keep me pretty busy, so I don't get as much exercise as I should. When we finally unearthed the bathroom scale after a year-and-a-half-long renovation in our new/old house, I discovered I had put on more than 20 pounds. Now my new rower is right beside my desk, and I actually like the motion of rowing, so I have no excuse not to hop on.

I'm looking forward to checking in here regularly.

Reintroducing myself

Post by arm0110 » February 11th, 2008, 6:45 pm

It's been a couple years since I was last on the forums. Back then I was pregnant and having some trouble rowing, and finally had to quite due to complications.

I've had health problems since and have rowed now and then, but I'm finally getting my strength back and I'm back on the C2 regularly, and I'm so excited about it! I kept my rowing logbook in my drawer hoping that I would be able to row regularly again, and now I'm on track to finally hit the million meter mark by June!
