Hi Pammie, We're twins! :D My b-day is on Tuesday also, though I will be 43.

Welcome to the world of erging. It has been a useful weight loss tool for many, as well as a good way to recover from injuries in other sports. Keep it up, and you'll get back to lightweight in no time. :)

Welcome Pammie!
One of the things that makes rowing so great is that it is considered no-impact. No pounding. I think you'll find it a wonderful complement to your running program.

And happy birthday to you and MomofJBN this Tuesday!

Hi everyone. I spend a lot of time browsing the forum off and on, usually when I'm looking for motivation.

I'm 31, I've had a Concept 2 for about 2 years. I really enjoy the workouts as a supplement to cycling (my main exercise) and the elliptical (my at-home cardio machine).

I've searched with no luck - I was hoping someone could point me toward a thread about building large muscle, or rather, how not to do so. I tend to bulk up quickly and though I love the strength, the arm size isn't very ladylike. Has this been discussed?

Thanks, and I look forward to participating in the group!

Welcome GGW,
How to not build muscle? Don't train with heavy weights.
Do high reps with light weights or back off training a body part you feel is too big (or train other areas harder to gain balance).

In general it is very difficult for women to build muscle mass.
Women have a higher percentage of body fat, we have different predominant hormones, slower metabolisms and smaller bones. All these factors make it much more difficult for women to gain muscle mass. For most women it takes a heck of alot of very hard work and effort to build muscle mass (naturally, without steroids).
If you happen to be one of the few who are genetically gifted and are able to easily build muscle, IMO, rejoice, and thank your lucky stars.
I think having a fit, muscular body is incredibly sexy (in both men and women). I've never been considered or treated unladylike for having well developed muscles, rather the contrary.

You can start a new thread on the topic.

Newbie looking to improve Health & Lose Weight!

Post by TXGirlRower » July 6th, 2007, 5:33 pm

Hi!

I'm very new to rowing and just placed an order for a Concept D - PM3 this week.

I am 35 yr old Mom in Austin, TX. I took a class on rowing through my local rowing club. Only then did I remember that rowing had always been something that I was naturally drawn to my whole life (the gym rowing machines always called to me although I never had a clue how to use them!)

I've gotten out of shape since the birth of my last child three years ago thanks to subsequent multiple ruptured discs in my back. Moving around was challenging enough, so even moderate exercise was discarded. Once my back reached a place of stability I reincorporated moderate exercise into my routine and finally felt completely ready to add something new to the mix. Hence my jump into rowing! After working with the machines at the rowing club a bit, I was hooked and looking into bringing one into our home ever since. At 135-140lbs now, my goal is to slim down to the 120-125 range.

As a newbie, can someone point me to the best places to familiarize myself with all the jargon and any plans on workout routines? I've been exploring RowPro and it looks like a great fit for what I want - but I would love to hear any advice on using or making the most of the tool.

I'm so glad I found this forum! Looking forward to learning more!

Hi TXGirl and welcome! I am 43 and have 3 sons. I certainly understand the getting out of shape thing. Erging is a great way to get back in shape because you can do it at home and you can get a good work-out in not too much time. Several of us meet on Rowpro for non-competitive rows, so PM me if you want to join.

How is everyone's summer? It seems to be moving quickly. I have been off the erg for awhile. Had a back thing in May. I pulled a muscle that went into spasm. Scary, could not move! So no exercise at first, moving up to limited. Dr. said no rowing! So I am finally getting there, after Physical Therapy (Love my therapist!) and just being good (listening to Dr.). I am taking it slow, but happy to return. Talk soon. Welcome to all the new rowers.

Hi everyone. I bought my C2 in June and already I want to do a competition :D I'm aiming for the Victoria Monster Erg and have a lot of work ahead of me.

About me: I work and have an 18 month old. I have let myself go a bit lately, using all kinds of excuses. But it's time to stop making excuses.

Thanks for being here!
Michelle

total newbie hello

Post by terraunbound » July 19th, 2007, 5:46 pm

Hello Everyone,
I am completely new to rowing, two weeks now, and love it! There was a notebook with suggested workouts from Concept2 in our exercise room and thus found out about this fantastic site. I can really relate to many of your stories of being in our middle years and realizing that we need to exercise, but doing what? Stairmaster just hurts my knees, plus my aerobic capacity just isn't there; treadmills are soooo boring - excuses excuses, etc.

Then a colleague offered to show me how to use the rowing machine and its like I was meant to be rowing. Back in college I was too short to even be considered for the team so I'd missed out how much fun this is. Anyway looking forward to becoming more fit, hopefully losing some weight, improving my technique, and interacting with you all on this forum.

Hey everyone

Im sort of new to rowing- started last year with my high school team and pretty much fell in love. Although erging isnt my favorite workout method, I like the workout i get and the way I feel afterward- mostly I like that it helps with my water performance. I love going on the water and racing. :D
