Another newbie question

Post by Sasha » March 17th, 2006, 10:19 am

I told my story over on the weight loss forum. I'm not sending you there but suffice it to say I'm brand new and don't know squat, except where to find 3 C2s within a mile and a half of my house.

What sort of shoes do folks wear? I've looked at lots of pics, but somehow feet aren't prominent. And my running shoes seem bulky and cumbersome, especially with foot straps. So tell me if I should just get used to it or if there are great differences in what folks do or ...

Shop around for shoes

Post by LacticAcid » March 17th, 2006, 12:07 pm

I use a cheap $35. pair of running sneakers.

Perhaps your running sneakers are bulkier than others. I am also a runner and I have several pairs. The lightest pair with the least support is used for my erg.

Go shopping, try on different styles of running sneakers and find a pair that works.

Some erg without shoes! Thongs (flip flops) or even socks can work.

A question on shoes can be answered by many, but only you can make the decision on your comfort. Whatever works for you!

Funny, this was one of my last posts on the old, mothballed C2 board:

I wear white Keds sneakers, the kind that have looked exactly the same since the 50s. Flat sole, thin canvas upper, cheap enough to serve as dedicated erg shoes.

I agree with Ducatista. I have found that flat lasted shoes work the best. I have size 13 feet and most running shoes are way to wide to fit squarely in the heal cups. I use an old old pair of addidas campus shoes or a pair of converse chuck taylor low tops. But I know of many folks that like to go without shoes. the major issue for me is that the shoe fits in the stretcher properly.

Use firm shoes whit hard soles, or do it bare foot. Normal runningshoes are do have soft soles, it is not nescesary to damp any pressure.

After being unhappy with running shoes, I got some shoes that I would describe as spike-less track shoes. Soft (but thin), flexible soles and soft upper. I do have to add a little padding (bubble wrap) behind my heel so that the hard plastic doesn't dig into my heel.

I got a pair of these

and they seem to be working well for me. (From Zappos, of course, because where else would I buy shoes?)

...and this ole gran uses her running shoes...yes,soft soled but comfy for the longer rows... and with her (hard) running orthotics inside and her built up heel on the shoe on her short leg side.

In this way, she avoids all the injuries due to collapse of medial arch of the foot and also the unilateral injuries due to rowing with the pelvis and spine "askew ". Mind you, she does not row very fast but the effort involved feels just the same!

Those are pretty Ping.

I row with cheap walking shoes from Wal-Mart or barefoot (because I just have to row and I am too lazy to go upstairs and get my sneakers!). Of course, I am new to rowing (having lapsed for 3 year), but I have small feet for a HWT so adjusting the foot thingy is hard when I go " o naturale".

Since you mentioned Zappos...
I have ordered my Tennis Shoes from there a few times. So I went there and did a search on "rowing" and it came back with these:

Interesting looking shoe. I have been wearing an old pair of these:

They have most of the tread worn off from playing tennis. They work fine for me.

Edit:
OMG
I just realized I posted in the womens forum. Please forgive me. Kind of feels like walking in to the women's restroom...

Torpedo,

Do you walk into women's restrooms often?!

Trust me, I would much rather see a guy in the women's forum than in the bathroom with me! Well I guess it depends on the guy! Really, feel free to post here whenever you want.
