I am new to the erg (and to rowing), having just purchase my Model D about one month ago. So far, I have rowed just over 100,000 meters total. I started with the beginner's workouts on the website, and then two weeks ago I switched to the UK site's interactive weight loss programme. The first week rowing the program, I still hadn't figured out the heart rate monitor, so I completed the 5 hour-long rows suggested at probably sub-optimal effort (probably 55-60% MHR I would guess.)
This week, the program alternates three days of short interval rowing at high intensity (85-90% MHR) and two days of longer workouts, about 1/2 hour total at 80-85%MHR.
The first time, I tried to row the high intensity intervals, I was able to do it. The next day was a rest day. Then, I rowed 2 x 14', but I had a tough time sustaining my heart rate above 80%, and the last 3-4 minutes of the second set I couldn't keep my heart rate up since I was feeling some strain in the back and shoulders. Today, I rowed 3 x 6' (with 5 minute warm-up), but couldn't get my heart rate above 85% (mostly was in the 80% range).
So, what's going on here? Do I just need to keep row and eventually as I become stronger I will be able to work hard enough to reach the targeted heart rates. I am definitely sweating and breathing at a good rate.
Thanks for the help.
BTW, I LOVE my erg, and my 11 year-old daughter is on it everyday too.
