new rower interested in complementary weight training

Post by ms_122 » January 25th, 2010, 1:14 pm

Hello,

I just started rowing one week ago, and I am moderately out of shape. I m interested in general fitness and weight loss/control. I have 1-10 lb free weights at home. I thought a weight program might be a good complement to the erg. I asked for suggestion on the training forum, and someone recommended I start with unweighted squats (200squats.com). Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Mary

Mary - Assume you want to use the weights for toning & general strength.
There are a few threads on rowing-specific weight training, but based on your post, further assume that rowing is a means to an end, so rowing-focused weights are not really of that much interest.

Not sure what specific muscles you need to strengthen or tone, but you might consider the situp version of 200squats. Great for the abs, which don't get worked all that hard on the erg.

That said, if you can stand it, a high volume of erging is a pretty good fat burner. If that is #1 on your list, don't sacrifice too much aerobic (erg) volume for weights until you are at or close to the weight you want.

Cheers. Patrick.

Thanks. Patrick.
